They are phasing the 10k's out!! thats a shame.....
They couldn't do another one here the town is just too small unfortunately. There are other ones in the area but people like to do this one cos they all know each other. It is good fun and I enjoy it......but I do have to leave my grumpy OH waiting bored at the finish line.....:rotfl:Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford

The cancer charity that organises RFL also organises 10k's which are open to both sexes. I do know of some women in yesterdays run who would not run if men were entered, not saying that that is right just is how it is. Our race is always oversubscribed many times over and it would be a shame if some women didn't get in because they had to compete with twice as many people.
I am not disagreeing with you and I am not sure every RFL is the same I am just looking at it from my home town point of view.
And to think that discrimination laws were developed, and in the main readily accepted by men, to correct injustices against women.
Now imagine, even just in casual conversation, if I was to say that I'll never run in any event if women are allowed to enter! Quite apart from it being a ridiculous thing to say, and I wouldn't even think it, I can just imagine the grief I'd get from any women in earshot.:o
So maybe there's a little hypocrisy in play..................?
As I said previously, it doesn't really bother me one way or the other from a running point of view but for beginner male runners/walkers/keep fitters I can imagine a few find the whole thing quite insulting - its tantamount to saying that men will spoil the event!:rolleyes:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I find it funny though - because other longer races (marathons especially) are being cut to make way for more 10ks as they make more money for the organisers whereas longer races usually generate a loss - especially now they wont put time limits on them - for LM they have to close the roads for 7 hours (plus the time beforehand) - it must cost a fortune , so you can see why 10k is cheaper to organise and there are plenty around so its not too bad if the RFL ones disappear0 -

You're quite right.
In Leeds the marathon and half marathon (both long standing events) were both dropped as a result of the council throwing all its support behind the Jane Tomlinson 10K event.
So not only have you got rid of two very well supported quality long distance athletic events and replaced by a shorter event, the replacement is also widely viewed as a 'non competitive' event. Another nail in the coffin lid of the sport!
The half marathon was hastily brought back on May 10th after the level of outcry over what had happened - an indication of the level of unrest these charity events are causing. It does seem inevitable though that it is only a temporary reprieve.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Totally agree Rich - I am not saying any of the women actually said they wouldn't run if men were 'invited' :rotfl:its just my perception - and I may be wrong!
It wouldn't bother me if you said you wanted to run in an all mens race.....I would just think you were sad....see my point!Quality is doing something right when no one is looking - Henry Ford
