It looks like Alias has indeed been arrested and locked up in the RFL prison!:p:p

On that particular subject, these RFLs have caught my attention in the last week as something seems a little amiss about where the money goes.

The first point is the entry fee of £12.99. With an average of 2500 women in each event that equates to £32,500 for each event. All well and good if that were going to do some vital work ...but no, in their own words "Entry costs £12.99 per person. This covers the cost of organising and running your event on the day".

Hmmm! Now bear in mind these are 5K events usually in park environments. Parkrun organise 5K events in park environments every week across the country at nil cost, mainly because they are run by volunteers.

So maybe there are no volunteers involved in running the RFLs? Well actually there are 16,000 volunteers (out of the total 46,600 cancer research volunteers) running the RFLs!

In totality Cancer Research UK raise a net £6,000 per volunteer in a full year - well done the volunteers!:D:D

Obviously there needs to be an admin function to coordinate all the activities, ie take the money from the fund raisers and dish it out to the cancer researchers. But does it really need 4,053 people costing £130,000,000pa to do this? This includes one at £250,000pa, four between £140,000 and £160,000pa, another fifteen over £100,000pa and another 98 between £60,000 and £100,000! These are not the scientists - just the direct employees involved in collecting the money and deciding who gets it.

Considering the grief the MPs are currently getting you have to question why this organisation need 120 people on salaries at or above MP level.

There is no question that the volunteers do a great job and that the end research activity is making successful discoveries. As with a lot of charities though it is the bit in the middle that often gets bloated (and overlooked!).

No because this is there stock answer on the website:

    01. Why is Race for Life for women only?
Race for Life is the only women-only event of its type organised by Cancer Research UK. We restrict entry to women due to the wishes of our participants. It is one of our most successful events because it is a unique opportunity for women to come together in a non-competitive and celebratory atmosphere.

Interestingly, they make an explicit statement about being a non discriminatory organisation on the basis of........gender amongst other things when it comes to employment practise.

I wonder why they think its a good idea to annoy men who may well have had a partner, daughter, mother, other relative who has suffered/died from breast cancer and would like to participate and raise funds?

Also, why do they insist that children taking part between the ages of 5-16 must be female. Surely this is likely to irritate the women who do take part, and provide all their funding, by saying you can bring your young daughters but you need to leave your young sons at home?

They are an odd set up to say the least!

Men get breast cancer too by the way ;)

I think its odd as well - it would be fine to say its non competitive and leave it at that I think - I dont get why they assume that non competitive = no men

If you were just starting out in running RFL gives you a great way to experience a race atmosphere thats fun and friendly - why not let men take part in that as well - there are plenty of begginer men runners as well ...

If it was the other way round - i.e. male exclusive events, then there would be an uproar...also it annoys me a bit because I am competitive and a woman does that mean there is osmething wrong with me??

I did last years RFL and I do worry where the money goes too, but I have also been too lazy to look it up. I mainly do it because of the atmosphere surrounding this event in my home town.. to be honest, its hardly a 'race' now more of an event. We couldn't even run for the first half k cos the path out of the park was so full. We have to run on the roads as our park is tiny and I wonder if RFL organisers have to pay the local police for the extra policing. I wonder if our tight council also charges the organisers for the use of the park it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

The cancer charity that organises RFL also organises 10k's which are open to both sexes. I do know of some women in yesterdays run who would not run if men were entered, not saying that that is right just is how it is. Our race is always oversubscribed many times over and it would be a shame if some women didn't get in because they had to compete with twice as many people.

I am not disagreeing with you and I am not sure every RFL is the same I am just looking at it from my home town point of view.

Yeah the 10ks are being phased out apparently because then they do have to pay for road closures and they dont make any money from them...(a friend used to work there ;))

The point about 5k is that its a great starting distance and is very accessible for everyone :D

I get the point about them being oversubscribed but so is LM and you just accept that as part of the race - if you get in thats nice and if you then there are other races...they also run more than one in many towns (4 in Cambridge for example) so if they are oversubscribed enough they can always do another one (although not so sure when road closures are involved) :D
