Rich, great to see that you're OK. How long did you have to wait last night?

Yes I'm feeling OK after Prague. Have been laughing this morning at my photos. They even have video online of me crossing the finish line! Amazing.

I'm looking forward to a nice little run tonight. I don't want to overdo it but I'm itching to get back out there. Its funny, I did get the 'never again' feeling straight after the race, but now I'm feeling a bit sad that it is over, and I still want to do my Saturday long runs. I'm going to have a look round over the weekend for an Autumn target race. Probably not a full marathon, but more likely a half. I can't train without a goal, it all seems a bit pointless.

By the way, DS is still beaming all over his face this morning. :D

Not long - In about 9:30, out at 10:30. Not sure whether thats good or bad as the last time I went was 1995, but it seemed very straightforward compared to some of the horror stories you generally hear about.

Why not target the inaugural Fleetwood race - there's a half if you fancy that rather than the full marathon.

Right off to see if I can find this video.....

  • Hi

I am new to this blog and reading some of the great stories of people’s achievements, well done everyone!

I used to run 8-10 years ago the most was around 8 mile are so. I consistently ran 3 or 4 1/2 mile circuits, 3 mile in about 21.30 mins and 4 1/2 mile in about 30.30 approx which at the time i thought was slow but now if I could still do it wow!!!

I am 32 now and want to get back into the running game again my goal is to complete the Belfast Marathon. My wife got me a treadmill & cross-trainer last Christmas and I have used it once or twice.

I recently documented the couch to 5k training plan but being a past runner I feel I want to run 2-3 mile rather than run/walk if you know what I mean.

Are there any tips or good advice anyone can offer?

Well, at 32 there's no reason why you cant reach the previous times and then surpass them.

The key is to try not to rush it and accept that running 10-12 minute miles might be where you're at to start with. Concentrate on getting some distance into your legs for the first few weeks - record the times of runs but dont push the pace. You have to rebuild the muscles and oxygen infrastructure before you can start getting ambitious.

However, the 'muscle memory' from your previous efforts will make this process somewhat quicker. Try to get your training runs up above 4 miles as soon as you can and get rid of the 2-3 mile runs. 4 miles is the 'training effect threshold' and you will get far more 'bang for your buck' in terms of improvement if you keep all your runs at least at 4 miles. I keep the minimum distance at 10K for that very reason.

Thanks for the quick response Rich.

I understand about the quick process as I have tried to start running before and could run 2-4 miles without stopping but at a slow pace 10-12 min miles!!

Answer me this I dont really want to hit the road at the moment would the treadmill be sufficient??

I've never run on a treadmill so can only go by other people's comments.

It would seem that its better than nothing, but by its very nature it is a different running action and most people seem to find it a good bit harder once they get out on the roads.

Why wouldn't you want to get outside though - fresh air is far better than a sweaty enclosed room!:D

Its strange, I remember that bit in extreme detail, I was so emotional I wanted to cry, but tried my best to stay composed. Other bits of the race are just a blur. Some of the pics are great and I wouldn't mind sharing with people, but some are awful. Maybe I'll get a fake tan next time. Those white legs are just too much!

As far as my next race goes, I can't do Fleetwood unfortunately, as I'll be relaxing in sunny Portugal then. The Garstang Half Marathon is the week after though, so I think I'll target that one. Would you add it to the list for me please? (20th Sept)

I just find the problem with a treadmill is that it gets quite boring...I can run 6 miles and it appears to be in no time at all but on a treadmill I am constantly looking at my watch.......

Thats why my treadmill is next to the big telly ;) Most i've done was a 3 hour odd session as it was !!!!ing down outside.

I also buck the normal trend and find it easier to run at the same speed outdoors than on the treadmill. Might just be a naff distane easuing going on with the treadmill though.

Yeah, get some of the pics posted - you look great in full flow!:D:D

It looks like thats your next target sorted then. If I remember correctly the Garstang race is pretty flat too. A mate of mine once won the Garstang half and got £500 in sports vouchers to spend in one sports shop in Blackpool. It would take most regular runners 2-3 years to spend £500 on running gear so he spent the next week soliciting orders from everyone and anyone who might need some gear. After all the bribing with discounts I think he ended up with something like £125...he'd have been better off just stocking up with running shoes and getting a few years ahead!
