Well Becky my last one (last sept) was 2:36 :rotfl:I would love to do a sub 2 hours but I think I have to be realistic and aim for around 2:05-2:10

That would be a great improvement :D even with the 2h 10m

Kms - I've had to go for a lie down after reading of your exploits (although cant start to understand what all that cyber game gobbledygook was all about!:p).

189 laps of a track - do you have your own personal groove etched in the surface at the end that you can initial?:p

Anyway hats off to you, I cant comprehend running 47 miles so the 'mind over matter' strength must be all important for such an endeavour.

Good luck with that little sprint in Edinburgh!;)

I did 5 miles on the treadmill last night for the first time ever, and kept the incline at 1 for 3 mile and then 0.5 for the other 2 miles and it took me 1hr02mins which I was quite pleased with for a first!

Going to do the distance outside tomorrow! :j

This is simply a random list of terminology which is often used on the thread. It is not in any particular order and will be expanded as we go along. It will probably be moved to the first page eventually.

WAVA - 'World Association of Veteran Athletes'. More commonly known for compiling age gradings which are a way of comparing all runners of any age or gender on an equal and fair basis.

Base Training - A form of training which is effectively the foundation building block necessary to strengthen the body before attempting more demanding and high risk forms of training. It is pretty much a period when the training is predominantly long slow miles - distance rather than speed.

LSD/LSR - 'Long Slow Distance'/'Long Slow Run' They are one and the same thing and are the key component of base training.

Fartlek - Is a Swedish word meaning 'Speed Play'. It is a form of continuous training whereby the speed is varied up and down during the run to help the body adapt to higher speeds for short periods.

Intervals - An essential part of any serious training program and classified as speedwork. Similar to fartlek in that it is a way of helping the body to adapt to higher speeds for short periods. A typical interval session may be 8 x 800m with 1 minute intervals or 24 x 200m with 1 minute intervals. Not a form of training to be used as a beginner runner as the risk of injury is high!

Affilliation - This refers to UKA affilliation and is automatic if you are a member of a normal running club. Affilliation affords certain benefits including a £2 discount on all race entry fees.

    Age Groupings - Used for race classifications. For men 18-40 = Senior Men, V40, V45, V50, V55, V60, V65, V70 are veteran categories that you enter on your 40th, 45th, 50th birthday etc. Below 18 there are yearly categories JM14, JM15, JM16, JM17 whereby JM14 = 14 year old Junior Men. Ladies' equivalents are 18-35 Senior, VW35, VW40, VW45, VW50, VW55, VW60, VW65, VW70 plus the juniors as for men JW14, JW15, JW16, JW17.

Sorbothane - A brand name for shock absorbing insoles which replace the ordinary insoles in running shoes. The main benefit is to disperse 95%+ of impact forces laterally rather than up through the legs and knees. Very beneficial for long term lower leg health.

Chip Timed - A method of timing a runner's race time from the start line to the finish line through attaching a small microchip to the running shoe laces or in some cases to the running number. The traditional timing is also known as 'Gun Time' which is, as the name suggests, is the time from when the gun goes off to the runner crossing the finishing line. Usually the 'Chip Time' will be a little less than the 'Gun Time' due to the time it takes a runner to get across the starting line.

Online Tracking - Sometimes available for larger races. It is basically online access to the chip timing available as the race progresses.

Parkrun - A Parkrun is one of several weekly Free 5km races around the country. All are scheduled for 9am each Saturday morning and further details and locations can be found at parkrun.com .

    Km/Mile Conversion - 1 mile = 1.609km. For quick conversion during races it is accurate enough to convert 5miles = 8km, 10miles = 16km, 15miles = 24km, 20miles = 32km, 25miles = 40km.

Pace - Is the time taken to cover a given distance eg 7:00 mins/mile.

Speed - Is the distance covered in a given amount of time eg 8 miles/hour.

Hi all - you've all been doing really well. after having my hip problems, I decided to take a bit of time away from running, but have started back at the gym over the past month (it's been a month today) and I've lost 9 pounds in that time! Best part has been that there's no hint of hip pain, so I'm concentrating on doing some strengthening work of the abductors and quads to try and protect it.

I guess pounding the pavements isn't for me anymore, but hey, I've found something that works for me!

You guys are going great guns too - you've really given me the push to get off my backside and do something, albeit not the running I want to be doing.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
