Hi. im still lurking and reading all your times and am still gobsmacked. Havent done any running for the last 2 weeks as i hurt my ankle and its only just getting better. DOnt know what i did but it swelled up. So have decided for the next few months to ditch the running and concentrate on building my strength up for the challenge im doing in June then i think i might do the running after that, hopefully i'll be a lot stronger

Hi Hayley - hope the ankle gets better soon! We do miss your cheery face around (I love your avvie :D)

    Hi Becky
never run before in my life (45 next b'day). 14 weeks to go til race on 21st June - Jane Tomlinson's run.
I walk to and from work every day - 1km each way. Do have a step counter and have been averaging 8-10,000 steps per day
Have been going on 3km walk/jog on a Sunday with 2 friends who have also entered the race. They are 5 years younger and 2 stones lighter than me!!!
First 2 weeks have been walking at the gym 3-5km depending on how much time I have.
Week 3 - is supposed to be walk 5 mins, jog 5 mins for 30 mins.
went to the gym tonight but ended up doing 7km on the bike cos blister was rubbing on the ankle. Will blitz the blister then will be ok for Thursday at the gym.

    Hi Sunny,

Sorry I missed your reply :o

Again its not a method we recommend but if it works for you then go for it!

I would do you jogging first and then when you cannot go any further switch to walking rather than alternating as its kinder to your muscles (they will be warm rather than cold after walking) :D

    Happy running!

    Hello! :hello:

Well I feel completely dwarved by all your efforts!!!

I'm running a 5k in May and wanted to get started running again by training for that. I've got the proper sensible running shoes (a lovely Asics pair) that correct my over-pronation (and are like running on little clouds...bliss!) and have started training with my friend.

I'm starting off doing the run-walk thing (got a timer cd put onto my phone) as I'm asthmatic and need to build up my distance slowly so I'm not found wheezing under a park bench! Going to build up to running the full 5k.

What's a good time to aim for for 5k, for someone with a slightly dodgy knee & questionable fitness levels?

Hi. I'd say anything around 30-40 minutes can be considered a good first time depending on various things.

What I would say is avoid the run-walk thing when you're just starting out. Or to be more precise, start by running as far as you can (speed doesn't matter at this stage, just a slow but steady pace) and then walk the rest of the way. Plenty of walking should be included in your build up. If you run-walk-run-walk you risk injury, especially if you walk for more than about a minute. It lets your muscles cool down and then you start running from cold again, which is when most injuries happen.

First thing to do is to get used to covering 5Ks in one go, even if you only run a but at the start and walk the rest. Don't worry if you don't cover 5K at first, but gradually build it up. At the same time, try to increase the length of the run until you're running the full 5K. After that, I'm sure someone here will do you a plan in which you will run slightly further than 5k and introduce some speed work, interval training, hill running etc. But only if there's time. Getting round is the first priority!

Ring up now - dont make me tell you again

(or you could do as I'm going to this evening and nip to the NHS walk in centre on the way home from work :D - I just want them to rule out stress fracture on my shin for my own piece of mind before I run again )

OK, OK. I consider myself told! But I'll try the stretching/warm up first to see if that does it. My normal run starts with a downhill bit, so maybe I'll walk that, then warm up and stretch and off I go! If it doesn't work, I'll have to see my doctor, who I'm certain will have no idea who I am!

If its IBT though you may need to get a physio appoint to look at your running style - which is free if you get referred through your docs - go get it looked at please (typical man *Becky rolls eyes*)

Sheesh! You sound like my wife! ... And I do concede that you're both right. I will make an appointment to get it looked at.

Well so docs didnt go so well - 3 days off running and if no better a trip to hospital for an x-ray - also told not to run race this weekend - but I'm going to wait and see on that score yet...

Not going to panic yet re:London - it may get better this week - here's hoping :D
  • Look out everyone - low flying endorphins coming through :j :j

Week 2, Day 2 of the plan today - fartleks, ooh, my favourites. :T Armed with Rich's advice from last week - 'no sprinting simply' - I aimed for a steadier slower/faster approach. The result - 4.02 miles in 39:02 (9:42/mile). :D

Sorry to hear you are still poorly uk.

Beer tins and Becky - let's hope those injuries clear up quickly.
