    Week29
    Mon16/3 Rest Day
    Tues17/3 10K 54:29 (8:47/mile) (Pulse 70)

That was a surprisingly flowing run considering that today is the peak day for stiffness/after effects from the hard 20 miler on Sunday. The pulse tends to suggest that a lot of the repair work has been completed as well so a very encouraging run.

    Just 19 days to Marathon day!!!!:D :D:D

I think its worth relating a discussion I had yesterday re charities and The London Marathon. I was speaking to a local organiser for a national charity. At local level they need funding for day to day running cost for a mini bus for the a physically handicapped group.

They are all volunteers at local level. She was telling me what a problem they have raising the money they need. If they pay for a FLM bonded place through their national organisation they need to raise £2,400 in sponsorship to receive 25% (£600) at local level, out of which the bonded place fee of £200 is deducted. So they end up with £400 out of £2,400. £1,800 goes to pay simply for people sitting in offices shuffling paper. And she showed me a list of how different charities perform in this regard - they were one of the better ones, some of the larger charities (not mentioning any names), involved in FLM, filter less than 10% to the cause that the runner thinks they are raising money for.

Anyway, their solution to this is to find a marathon runner themselves who isn't attached to a charity already and then give a cast iron guarantee that 100% of every pound raised (in fact more with gift aid) will go to the running of the mini bus. Hence, I'm running for them in Abingdon and they are happy to do all the fundraising work. Btw she didn't know I ran marathons when she was telling me all this!

I wonder how many runners would be so happy to strive to raise as much as they could from friends/relatives/colleagues if they realised that the vast majority of their efforts (75%plus) were just paying for admin staff?

    I know mine doesnt :D

(but thats the good thing about small charities - and I think if people want to find out they can ask for access to the charity accounts I believe)

Oh and good on you by the wya for accepting!

Also people forget that online sponsorship take a piece of the money too...justgiving is the worst culprit! I think its terrible that barely any of the money gets back to the charity that the person has spent months raising for. Makes me happy that what I raise will go straight to my charity :)
I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change And breakaway. I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change and breakaway ....

    Yeah, OK, point taken :D

But if you look at the total climbing and decending on each of them, it's only about 50% more than you're used to - just grouped together differently.

    Conclusion - you'll be fiiiiiine :D

Thats not strictly true though - they charge 5% or something which is actually taken off the gift aid bit, see here:
    http://www.justgiving.com/statements/commissions_popup/default.asp

And the charity gets the money weekly, which is good if the person withdraws :D

I do think actual cash donations are better though - but I decided I didnt have time to collect them all later when people have forgotten they would sponsor me, so if anyone wants to donate that way I push them to send the money to the charity direct and put my name on it - they've had about £100 extra so far this way :D

This is why I prefer to give money to things that are actually tangible...Like "we need £5k for a baby-breathy-thingy" and so on - where you know that the cash you donate is going straight into something they can use and will make a difference.

Hypno, don't let age be a barrier.

At 38 you don't even get a weighting on the age grading scales, because you're still pretty much in the peak age range.

Look at yesterday's results from my race and just have a look at how many 'V's there are against the names, throughout all the standards - they certainly outnumber the 'youngsters' by a long way!

    http://www.ukresults.net/2009/trimpell20.html

So there's no reason at all why you cant be faster than when you were 20.:D

I'm 38 and run marathons. I could never have done that at 20! I only started running at 35.

You only have to look at marathon result lists to see people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, etc.

I intend running as long as I can.

Paris Marathon in 3 weeks. :)
