And no - everyone has different aims - its just that its coming up to London and some other big marathons so most of us who are posting atm are heavily into the distance - over the summer I'll be focusing on shorter distance races a lot more than now in an attempt to improve my 5k and 10k times - in the next year or two I'd like to get sub 20 minutes and sub 40 if possible but its a looooong road to that so we'll see ;)

heheeee I love it when people call me 'an experienced runner' :D

I get stitches too and terrible heartburn - if I get one on a training run its a clear sign to me to slow down

Re the muscle - make sure you are stretching it an holding for a good 30 seconds before starting off (each stretch should last about 20-30 seconds) and run very slowly to start with to ease out any stiffness - you should fall into a comfortable pattern re:stride etc once you've been running a while - mine when I started was hilarious (think Phoebe) but its very neat now...

By the way 15 mins is a great starting amount - I couldnt run round the block when I started :D

oh I didn't start on that! I started doing runs between lamp posts and slooowly the run got a bit more joined up as I aimed for 2 lamp posts then 3 etc. I really did absolutely nothing in terms of fitness and I found it hard in the beginning but the best thing I did was to slow down and 'plod' like hypno lol

The first few runs I went out with my OH who is a firefighter and runs regularly, I was pulling away from them and dying in a matter of seconds! I think slowing down helps with your motivation, going all out often ends in failure so it puts you off getting back out there. Definitely does with me anyway!

  • I've only been running outside since the beginning of Feb superstylin; although I did a bit on the treadie before that.

I'd really like to run a marathon, it's been a secret ambition for many years, and have just started a training plan to try and get fit enough to run one in October of this year. It's early days yet though as the furthest I've run is 6 miles - only got to add another 20 to that and I'll be ok. :D

You'll be great Simply - the main thing with marathon running is consistency - week in week out building the mileage - but it weirdly never gets boring, you have rubbish runs sometimes but it just makes you want to get back out there :D

Makes my 3:24 for 18.5 miles look pretty pedestrian :o

Dont worry Hypno - that was a training run and the results are from a race - these guys were running at full speed (but still miles ahead of me too) - its only really Rich who mixes with the best of them on this thread :D

I think mine was at full speed too!!! Certainly towards the end I couldn't have gone any faster if I had had a bar of green & blacks dangled in front of me!

Any doughnuts left? I'm starting to get peckish :D
