Great news pink, keep at it! And don't forget that as you gradually increase the amount you exercise, you will gain muscle mass. So if the weight loss seems to slow right down, don't worry too much and concentrate on waist/clothes sizes instead.

Rich, Becky, I haven't done any real interval sessions yet, but my times are still creeping up. I'm playing 5-a-side footie 2-3 times a week (plus Badminton once a week with the wife). Do you think this is acting as a form of interval session/fartlek?!?

Not getting enough running in at the moment, though. Need to get a few decent runs in before NikeTown runners week after next. I'm joining their 7 miler and it's about 8 min/mile pace. I haven't run further than 4 miles in months

Hello runners! Can I join in? I've just registered to run a five mile road race on May 3 so need to get into shape. I am fairly fit but haven't run since last summer.

Can anyone recommend a training plan to get me from scratch to 5 miles in 8 weeks? Thank you!

The more the merrier! Sounds like you need to do a slow "see how far you can go" jog and get back to us with how you do on that before we can suggest a plan.

BTW, getting to 5 miles in 8 weeks should be no problem...

Becky where abouts on the Thames do you train? I relocate in a couple of weeks to Staines, so will be doing my running on the towpath towards London, running by the river is a great feeling.

Rusty I live and work in Zone 1 so I do mostly the Thames Path from Southwark to Battersea and back But its a huge trail and mostly easy to find:

Staines - tee hee that always makes me laugh :o

Dont forget to check out mapmyrun.com for other runs in the area :D

    Hi everybody :hello:

This is my frist time posting here and need some advice.

I am 22, never been particularly athletic or slim, although not 'fat' atm. My problem is I have Fibromyalgia and since I moved to the UK 3.5 years ago it's gotten MUCH worse, and I've also put on a lot of weight (went from size 10 to size 14)

I would like to start running but I've never done it before, someone told me because of this I have to start by just walking. Also because of the Fibromyalgia I have to start gently.

Does anybody have an idea of how many minutes I should start with? And how to transition into running?

Thank you very much in advance :o

    Hi Melika,

Welcome to the run club :D

I've just googled Fibromyalgia and ouch that sounds painful! I really think walking is the way to go for you especially if you suffer from joint stiffness as launching straight into running might be very painful...but dont worry we recommmend this to everybody as it happens!

Start with a brisk 15 minute walk that leaves you out of breath two to three times a week...if you find you are managing that then up the length and keep doing so until you can comfortabley walk for about 4-6 miles - this usually takes around 4-6 weeks, but I wonder if it may take longer in your case - only you know how much you can do before it starts tiring you out :D

Haleygrey and pink are in this stage at the moment and you can see how much enjoyment they are getting (and weight loss!) from it so its all time well spent.

No sooner said than done! I just went out for a gentle jog - two miles at a slow pace but it felt very easy and I could have done more. It felt good and I look forward to building up to five miles.

Wow Seax you are keen :D

Okay next questions...how many days a week are you looknig to run?? What exact date is the 5 miler?? Do you want a full plan or just some rough guidelines?? What time would you be aiming for (being realistic here ;))??

    Phew 20 q's over with...

Thank you so much for your reply Becky.

I'm sure I will be able to do this. The problem I have with outdoors exercise is that it's cold and this causes me to tense up and gives me really bad pain on my neck and shoulder area. On the other hand I just can't afford to join a gym. But I'm staying positive: if I eventually get to run, that means same amount of exercise for less time outdoors! :D

Right guys, I think you have a new regular!
