First day of my long road to running. I did a brisk 4.9 mile walk in lovely sunshine. It took me 105 minutes. I know its very slow but being so unfit it did raise the heart rate and I did feel as though I was getting a work out.
Rich the running program in my magazine advise alternating between running and walking to start off with. I'm no way near to starting the program but should I run walk run walk........... or run as far as I can. I want to be able to run 3 miles by June if possible.0 -
The runners in the thread IE Becky and rich ( the rest up us just stumble about in lycra trying to look the part ) will say thats its best to run and stop than run - stop - run - stop - run ETC.Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0

Well done on the walk Rachel - that is exactly what you should be doing. It is plenty fast enough as well. My 6 mile walks took around 2 hours back in September/October, which is very similar. The aim is just to get your body into a routine and strengthen the core muscles, mainly buttocks and lower back. The speed is not of much relevance, although it will naturally get quicker as weight drops.
My starting point was almost identical to yours in September and progression has got to the point of being ready for a marathon in 5 weeks time. There has been no run/walk/run/walk during this build up. There is no way I would entertain the idea if my own body was on the line. During this build up there has been no hint of injury and surely that is the most important element.
Concentrate on walking as much as possible, but when you do run just run as far as you can without straining, then walk the rest of the course. You will run 3 miles by June without any doubt.:D

Well done on the 11 miler Ukevas

I'm not running this morning as I ran last night instead - lets hope a super fast interval session happens tonight free of distractions, children and rain

Week27
Mon2/3 Rest Day
Tues3/3 10K 57:32 (9:17/mile) (Pulse 78)
Now into the last 3 weeks of full training before the marathon.
A bit of caution is being applied again to the start of this week to see how last week's 95 miles, and 322 miles over the last 4 weeks, has bedded down.
But everything is looking on track with 4 races still to go before the marathon as follows: 5K, 20 miles, 5K, 10K, Marathon.
Enjoy your running today everyone........:D

hey folks :j sorry i've not been around lately, but thought i'd give you a quick update.
Went the gym last night and managed 10 mins on the crosstrainer with an average speed of 8km/hr and i didn't die! :T I know i've only been at this running lark for 2 and bit weeks now, but when i started 6.5km/hr was enough to leave me gasping for breath and the heart monitor telling me to seek out an ambulance! :rotfl: Last night my heart rate never rose above 160! I still sweated through all my clothing but it all fits a bit better now i'm half a stone lighter!!!!
i love running!!! and i'm not even doing it properly, i'm still walking at 5km/hr, only managed 15 mins on the tread mill last night coz the gym was heaving and people were literally queing for the equipment, so didn't wanna hog it. But how good is that! 6 pounds off, heart no longer going to explode, i might actually manage this 10k after all
One thing tho.... when i'm walking i get a weird feeling in my right leg, in the south west region, sort of on the back but more on the inside of my lower calf, from just above my ankle about halfway up the muscle. It doesn't hurt, which is why i called it a feeling and not a pain, but it does feel tight. Is it just my muscles tightening from being used? or something more sinister?Debt@LBM1=£4050 1st DFD 27/08/09
