Rich - walk breaks depend on race length ;) There is no way i'll be running 12 hours let alone 24 non stop. For long distance stuff (anything over a marathon ideally) having a plan is always a good idea. For my 12 and 24 hour races as they are on a track its a simple plan, every 10th lap will be walked and used to get drink/food on board. For normal ultras its usually done off of time ie run 20 mins walk 5 mins and repeat. Off course sticking to the plan from the start of a ultra is the tricky bit. Anyone who is doing an ultra is capable of running probably 20 miles or more if they want to nonstop.

THe fastest people even up to 24 hour or longer races can and will run all the time bar drink/food stops. But then they are fast enough were running along at a steady but slower than usual pace is easy to them. They'd be 6/7 min milers says for a marathon say but drop to 8/9 min miling for this where as i'm only a 10 min miler for a marathon and i can run at 12 min mile pace as it to slow and leads to very bad running form.

I will say once you start run/walking it is hard to get back into a run only mode again.

KMS - I'm not surprised you're not running continuously for a whole day!

However, there is a huge difference between ultra runners having planned walk breaks as part of a race plan and beginners trying to get into running on untrained muscles.:D

Ultra running is more of a (very:p ) extended interval session.

Good reading all this, helps with the motivation. Had a very busy shift last night, had a cup of tea at 3PM when I got to work then nothing else to eat/drink till after midnight, so I'm shattered today, not running as I'm aware of not fueling properly will lead to a mare....But I'm on course so still happy. Will go to the gym later for a swim instead

Hi all, I ran 5.33 miles yesterday, and shaved off 2.30 mins off my time :)
Off to the gym today for some weights and a swim, having a rest day tomorrow. Then on Wednesday I'm attempting my longest run to date...7.13 miles

Wow well done Rahp! Just remember to take it slowly on Weds :D
  • That's some going Raphael, have fun on Wednesday.

No running for me after my 10k yesterday but I have been out walking. I thought that I'd try a new 5 mile route cutting through a local country park (I like to walk routes before running them for the first time).

I think it had more inclines than my usual route but will be worth a try next time I go out on fresh legs. Anyway, I'm waffling.

So, 5.13 miles in 81 mins for me today. Happy running everyone!!

That's some nice running Simply :D

Just got back from a leisurely 10k this afternoon - yes I know its my rest day but shhhhh ;)

And got my number for my 10k race on 15th March - 234 which carries on the thing now of 5348, 534 and 234 - obviously 34 has to come out somewhere (maybe in some far off land it will be my 10k time :D)...oppps now I'm waffling - off for a shower.

    Happy running all!

I only had an hour tonight while the children were at karate, so I did 5.5 miles - 57 mins....and I really enjoyed it. Completely the opposite to Saturday's run.....on Saturday I felt I was going nowhere, yet was reasonably fast, today I felt I was flying, yet I was slower

Which just goes to show - just run it, take it as it comes, because no two runs are going to be the same!

Anyway, I need something to eat now......I seem to have been eating all day (sensible stuff, you'll be pleased to know) but I have still felt hungry like never before!

becky - looking forward to reading about that 34 min 10k in due course :D

Maybe in ten years time Hypno - its far closer to my 5k time right now ;)

Glad you got back into the groove though - I do sometimes find running love/hate (like the New Balance ad actually) so I knew exactly where you were coming from the other day - its frustration that gets to me, so its good to see you got back on love wagon already :D

(I love days when my appetite goes on forever :D)

I am hoping it is my metabolism becoming super fast, and I will wake up 2 stone lighter in the morning :D
