I've got a garmin 405 - I certainly don't use it to its full potential, but I do love being able to upload my run to the laptop as soon as I get home!

Wearing the HRM scared me though - it told me my heart was going so fast I should have exploded after about 2 miles......so it stays on my windowsill instead :o

Me too Hypno. I think if my HR was 90 like Rich & Becky, I'd be in a coma. I checked it manually this morning straight after my run, whilst I was still steaming :o and it was 120! (That's just by feeling my pulse and watching my kitchen clock.)

120 mwhahaha - mine gets there occasionally after a hard interval session :D

Although, to be fair its difference in heart rate that matters - so my resting is sub 50 now so to get up to 120 is tough - but if your resting is 80 (say) then 120 is much closer so you dont have to be exherting yourself as much - just remember to track it over time - not just on runs :D

Heart rate is like BMI a useful indicator - not a written rule!

But my resting is 50 ish and my "plodding along at 11 min miles" is 180.....

Spontaneous combustion on the cards I reckon.....

Anyway, that's why I stopped using the HRM - reckoned I might get so scared that I would stop running!

Thanks for the tips Becky. I'm not too fussed about a "map", but does the Garmin 50 record your distance? Or is the 405 in order for that?

    The 405 seems a bit pricey (i.e. I'm a tightwad!)

It only does with the footpod thing - but I think it tends to come with the 50...

I'm a tightwad too - I agree its pricey - I just use map my run for distance and/or nokia sportstracker (which are both free :D):

Shhh dont tell Coachie - Garmin 50 if you dont need maps and 405 if you do:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&pID=11039 - amazon is usually a good bet for cheapest buys or try ebay...

Or if you have a nokia phone - try sportsracker - you can sync it to the satellites and do maps etc as well on the web, but no HRM even if you want it obviously, and doenst do live maps like a gps system (although if you can get gps on N95 to work I suspect it does do that)...

(I'm a gadget nerd too, but too poor to afford one ;))

    But I like gadgets too!!!:p :p:p

But they have to do something useful rather than just technology for technology's sake. Hence, mapmyrun and a stopwatch gives you pretty much everything you need.

What do you gain from all the other info that can be collected? it might be interesting, but it doesn't really achieve much knowing how your heart rate changed throughout the run.......or does it?

Or knowing exactly how far you've run to 0.01 of a mile can only be useful if somehow that is going to affect the rest of the session - I can't really think of an instance where that would be useful!

So gadgets are great, but only if they solve a problem that needs solving - or does that make me a luddite!:p :p

  • Chickadee - A nice bit of 'bouncebackability' displayed there. One week of rest and you're right back into the enthusiasm of the game!:D :D

Haley - Those 6 mile walks are exactly what gave me the core strength to handle the current running mileage. Keep doing those and you will be well set.

Thanks coach ;) . Yes I feel more with-it this week. My head was all over the place last week. Which begs the question, if I had still carried on running, would I have been less stressed? Too stressed to run = even more stressed because running relieves the stress IYKWIM.

  • Thats right, a bit of a viscious circle with the less you run the more stressed you get, including about not running, and therefore the less you feel like running!

But the opposite is also true so a virtuous circle of the more running you do, the less stressed you are...and therefore the more you want to run.:D

Until you get to a stage where you feel a bit peeved that you've got a rest day, and its nice and sunny and you want to go for a run......:p But I'll get over it - probably with custard therapy as usual!:D :D:D

Anyway, glad you're loving it again.
