I have and you need the extra RAM. I now have Windows 7, which is more memory efficient, but still uses half of the 1.5GB just after boot up.

Thanks, could you tell me how you did it please. Could you also PM me where you got teh 7 from and how much please.

There are numerous guides of how to do it on You Tube - google is your friend.
As for Windows 7, it's currently free as part of the open Beta - so you get it from Microsoft. Again, try googling it.
  • Windows 7 is beta software (i.e. pre-release and is available for free download from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx )

however, as it is beta software, it is not always the most stable and reliable and not all existing software works properly (or indeed at all).

Others have posted links to guides on upgrading the RAM, but as you'll end up taking the netbook completely to bits, unless you are comfortable with this (it's a bit nerve racking, even for someone like me who has a degree in Electronics and has built loads of PC's from scratch), I'd strongly recommend you either find someone who is or give it a miss.

As for how to install Windows on it, the easiest way is to attach an external DVD drive and install it from there.

Think i'll leave 7 for now, ta

In proccess of installing Vista, i tried numerous different ways but this was by far the easiest:
    http://www.techmixer.com/install-windows-vista-from-bootable-usb-flash-memory-drive/

Other guides cut down Vista as they are generally aimed at Netbooks with small hard drives but as mine has 160g just installed full version

I read somewhere that you can use other forms of memory to extend the RAM like SD , Flash etc but cannot now find it for the life of me! If anyone can point me in the right direction i would be grateful.

It's shaping up to be very good, but the occasional freezes where the system goes unresponsive for about 30 seconds to a minute are really annoying.

If you are installing Vista, you can use the memory stick afterwards for Readyboost, which is a halfway house between real memory and hard disk space. It will make the system perform better, although not as well as installing more RAM.

Blockbuster are selling 2nd hand Xbox 360 HD DVD drives for £7.99 - these work perfectly and I used this to install XP from my original disc on it.............

If you cant find any of these at Blockbuster then try TKMaxx. They are selling HD dvd player/drive for £20 but its brand new and boxed not second hand. they are originally for the xbox 360 but will wrk with the laptop as the have usb conectivity. its also plug and play and will work with linux

you can use it as a cd/dvd drive for the netbook, play hi definition dvds - hd dvds are cheap off ebay (as they are now not produced anymore) or use with xbox 360. plus they come with a fancy remote, which i dont need so sold on ebay to get most of my money back.

good luck trawling the tkmaxx store if you fancy one of these

**thanks to hotukdeals for heads up

edit: just wanted to add that these drives are going for upwards of £25 plus postage on fleabay so there is some resale value if u can get it at the blockbuster price or even the tkmaxx price

Hi! I'm also looking for a dvd drive, mainly so I can watch movies on my netbook.
Would the Xbox drive work with Linux? And are they USB plug in? Do you need to power them from the mains as well?

thanks to anyone who can answer these!
