I've not seen any DVD writers that can burn working just of USB. The laser for burning DVD draws a lot of power 1.3a from memory.
The older DVD writers may not cope with all the modern DVD media as a lot has changed in the organic dyes used. Could be worth dropping the speed if you hit problems or just use up any old media you have.
See my earlier posts .... I've the LG - it works perfectly, takes the power from the USB and can be used with either the (free) linux baker software (from the acer support website), or on Windows using Nero that comes with the LG ....

Got the last one of these from ASDA Living in Oldham. There were two other blokes after me wanting to buy one too. Result!!!!
Loaded XP onto it as soon as I got home, writing this on the beast now, love it, and to think I was going to spend nearly double on the samsung NC10.
For those wanting to load XP, it really is sooooooo simple. I have a USB lead that connects hard drives or CD/DVD Roms to any USB PC.

So, I took out my DVD drive from my desktop, connected it to the Acer via the lead, put in the XP CD, and hey presto, loaded XP. I had to format the hard drive when prompted, but no big deal at all. Downloaded the drivers from here : http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_150.html
Burnt them onto or CD (or use a pen drive), loaded them and everything works as it should do. When you load XP, the mouse woeks anyway, so to get everything else working, download the drivers......
This really is easy to do, and fully recommend this netbook, great piece of kit.....
Mine was only 120GB though, but thats more than enough for most, including me.
Hope this helps!0 -

Remember this cable only connects IDE devices - not SATA drives/cd/dvd roms etc
Other connection kits can be found on amazon that do both types of drive for about the same price. Do a seach on 'ide sata usb cable' for examples with reviews.0
