  • Picked one up but going back tomorrow - nothing but trouble. The battery will not hold charge, the on/off button is intermittent, when it does turn on the start up has disappeared and only once after a lot of trying did I or should I say my son managed to get the internet to work. Not for me. Did get the last one that was on show should have known better.

This site may be of use to those who haven't a clue about this netbook.

If you haven't already seen it mentioned, an extra gig of ram can be had from 'Crucial' for under a £11 delivered. Biggish job to install mind you (virtually take the whole netbook to bits). Not something for those with hammer hands or a nervous disposition. ;) But vital if you are thinking XP or Vista.

I sort of disagree mate, I installed XP SP3 from a cd, and it runs magically with the basic 512mb and I've done no tweaking or nliteing to it, I'm using it to surf, watch football on sopcast, tv on www.zattoo.com and all running fine..........having said that if you're gonna do more intensive stuff the extra 1gb would definitely help, but as a surfing, general machine the 512mb runs fine.................Vista is a different kettle of fish though lol!!

for anyone wanting to install XP on it, apparently Blockbuster are selling 2nd hand Xbox HD DVD drives for £7.99 - these work perfectly and I used this to install XP from my original disc on it.............

I've been experimenting with different OS after upgrading RAM to 1.5GB total(max). XP Home loads up fully in approx. 35 seconds and Windows 7 takes 50 seconds. Both systems work fine once correct drivers are re-installed from Acer website. For comparison my desktop PC loads XP Home in approx. 3 minutes (Athlon 3Ghz, 1GB RAM)! This notebook is much faster and capable than I originally thought :D overall very pleased with it.

update: thanks to seatzie above for blockbuster HD-DVD info. I managed to get one this morning for £7-99 (second store I visited), saves a lot of hassle with XP USB drives (although Windows 7 USB install is easy if you have another PC with Vista on).

A quick heads up to anybody out there still looking for one of these.
My friend went over to Monks Cross ASDA in York yesterday morning and they said they were out of stock. Later in the evening she returned to the store 'just to try her luck' and they apparantly had some more delivered in the afternoon.
So if ur really desperate fr one .. try calling the stores around again and you may be lucky.

Tip: Ask the first store you call if you can have the phone number for a place that can check the stock in/around an area (ie. more shops). I was given 01132435435 and they were able to search all the stores around me (not sure if their search is limited to the south east only)

that number is for an asda in leeds, so if they are able to search for you in the south-east hopefully they'll have a look elsewhere

I have and you need the extra RAM. I now have Windows 7, which is more memory efficient, but still uses half of the 1.5GB just after boot up.
