Readyboost type technologies simply cache harddrive accesses in flash memory.
While flash memory is lower latency than accessing a harddrive, you can't compare it to a ram upgrade - the two are addressing almost entirely different needs.

Note. I'm not disputing that ready boost will improve performance; but it should be considered an addition, not an alternative, to adding more memory.

It is an alternative to ripping your brand new shiney Acer apart and voiding your warranty!!!

I do take your point it is not a direct comparision but for those who dont want the hassle of taking the acer apart its definately a worthwhile alternative - and especially when you consider sd cards are so cheap these days.

I have built several systems and repaired lots of laptops but even I do not want to take my own brand new Acer apart when I dont need to.

I totally agree, hence why I said this a page ago :-
I think it's worth mentioning, even with just 1/2gb it runs XP remarkably well - IMO better than Linpus

Regarding the voiding of the warranty... from the installation guides i've read, it doesn't look like any seals of any kind are broken during the installation procedure, so regardless of what the warranty agreement states, how are they ever going to know?!

I take your point - but theres an awful lot of brittle plastic that can easily be broken or cracked.

I agree 512mb does run Xp fine

I suppose its upto the individual to make there own mind up.

If it aint broke dont fix it!!! Is what I say.
  • Great deal guys!

Did you spot this very simple 'tips and tricks' section from The Register (all round tech gurus)?

    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/12/04/acer_aspire_one_ui_fiddling/

Also, a couple of good intros to Linux from The Register also:

    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/10/28/netbook_linux_guide_2/

I hope that helps someone a little.

There are some people talking about putting Windows 7 on to it - are you guys in on some beta testing? Could you point me in the right direction to joining that or have you had to go to 'the dark side' to get copies?

Is anyone thinking that this website should be renamed 'moneyspendingexpert' - all these credit crunch bargains are just too exciting to miss... (still, already had my eye on one of these babies!)
