However, I realy don't like the layout of Linpus.
Had a look at other linux distro's, but according to the AA1 user forums the driver support is not there yet - and the installation instructions were scary even for the tech. savvy amongst us.
So....i'm in the process of constructing a bootable XP installation on a usb pen drive so I can install XP!
An OS i'm familiar with, and is guaranteed to have good driver support direct from the manufacturer.
How do you do the hack into Linux full desktopWe are the change we wish to see.0 -
right i've downloaded avast anti virus for it, but i can't seem to find where it has gone
s-i-l has had a look and he can't find it as well, any advice anyone
thanks0 -
what size usb stick is required to make a usb boot disc
Why not just buy an external cd-rom for £12.90 and install XP the normal way? 120GB is 10 times the space you need for a normal XP install without any messing about and the CD-rom will always come in useful in the future.

I got mine today! It's lovely, very easy to set up. I got onto my wireless network with no problem at all. :T In fact I'm posting from it now! lol
Now, I have a question about the Messenger service. I have a Hotmail MSN account, and it doesn't accept it....It says "Our protocol is not supported by the server." What does this mean? I also have an old yahoo account, and this one works fine.
Would I need to download MSN Messenger instead, and is it compatible with Linux? Many thanks!0 -

I just tried actually, and it won't open....I don't know how downloads are done with Linux, but it didn't look anything like the instructions on the download page....It keeps telling me that I need to install an update, but when I say OK, it says the update is unavailable.

While a perfectly valid approach, I think you might have forgotten what this website is all about? :money:
Going back to the original topic of xp installation via usb, I can confirm the program linked to in this Thread ( http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120444 ) works perfectly - and is not overly complicated to use.
You tell it which drive your XP disc is in, and which usb drive you want to copy the files onto, and hit "Go".
15 minutes later, and you have yourself a usb drive that will install XP. (Incidentally, many usb storage devices seem capable of being booted from - harddrives, memory sticks, sd cards mounted in usb adapters, mp3 players! cameras!! pretty much anything that mounts itself as a 'usb mass storage device'.)
Once you've got the xp installer on usb, plug it in to your AA1 (Acer Aspire One) and power it up.
Like normal XP installations, it occurs in 3 steps, each separated by a (re)boot.
(boot->text mode installation->reboot->gui mode installation->reboot->windows starts for the first time->you can now remove the usb drive.)
During each of these 3 boot-ups, you must make sure the machine boots from the USB device. (Either by permanently changing the boot order in the bios (F2), or pressing F12 during each boot cycle and manually selecting USB)
Once this is all done Windows should be up & running.
However, Windows does not come packaged with many of the drivers needed for the AA1's peripherals(ethernet/wireless/graphics/sound etc), so you'll need to download them from the Acer website ( http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_150.html ), and transfer them to your AA1 (again, via USB drive).
I'd start these drivers downloading on your other pc before you begin the XP installation process..... because the Acer website is sloooooooow.
:edit:
Please note the above is not an exhaustive step-by-step guide - I strongly recommend anyone thinking of attempting this to thoroughly read the Threads I linked to in my previous post before proceeding, as the above instructions ommit certain details that I couldn't be bothered explaining in full depth. (disable bios 'D2D' function, delete both linux partitions, etc)0 -
