However, I realy don't like the layout of Linpus.
Had a look at other linux distro's, but according to the AA1 user forums the driver support is not there yet - and the installation instructions were scary even for the tech. savvy amongst us.
So....i'm in the process of constructing a bootable XP installation on a usb pen drive so I can install XP!
An OS i'm familiar with, and is guaranteed to have good driver support direct from the manufacturer.

Depends on the version of XP you are installing, 1gb should be enough, 2gb will definitely be enough.
My initial attempt failed - due to the tool ( http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8151&start=50 ) being abit flakey.
I'm now trying using this tool :- http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120444
Will report back upon success (or failure =X )0 -

Right click on the 'EN' icon in the system tray & you should get a popup menu with 1 item; select it. You should now be able to correct your keyboard/language/locale settings to English/UK.
Thankyou so much you were right I have fixed it now0 -
Wine...
Whine - I am soo dense.
I just can't get my head around Wine - I think I get the theory, but every time I try and download the thing it seems to Install, then won't work.
Can anyone help a confused Dude?

Wine works fine, which application are you trying to run under Wine? Check out WineHQ or use a native Linux app. Photoshop and all the MS office apps 2003 run fine under Wine. Best place to ask are the Wine support forums.
A newbie was asking about the Acer One here http://www.nabble.com/Wine-install-on-an-acer-aspire-one-help-td19111173.html and the suggested solution was on WineHQ http://wiki.winehq.org/Recommended_Packages
If anyone is wondering Wine is a package that allows folk to run Windows applications under Linux. E.g Photoshop, etc. It is a good solution for large companies (Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney and some large banks have Linux desktops and use Wine to allow users to run Windows applications.) Wine is not really an end user tool and the learning curve can be steep. An option worth considering is to find a native Linux application to replace the Windows version. Some applications like Firefox and Thunderbird run on Mac, Windows and Linux.
If you have Wine questions the FAQ on WineHQ is a good place to start: http://wiki.winehq.org/FrontPageSeth.0 -

I don't know - maybe I'm thicker than I thought...
'Ubuntu.....Madriva' etc etc.
I'm not being lazy cause I've read the wine FAQ and manuals until my head is pounding.
I guess I just want someone to say - yes to install wine on the acer download this, run this etc.
Can it be this simple or am I hoping for too much?

Are you sure you need Wine? If so, then go here - http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/wine/130578-wine-1-1-4-linpus.html#post638997 but maybe you might want to take a step back & rather than trying to run the specific Win32 app, work out if it's possible to do what you need with a Linux app?0 -
