Thanks for various replies to my earlier queries. Spent best part of yesterday evening and today considering changing the OS from Linux to Windows to overcome the problem with my ISP (AOL) not accepting Linux systems, only to realise that I cannot install the XP that is on my desktop (which I would be continuing to use) onto the laptop, as the product key limits it to one computer. How is everyone else managing to change OS? Are they purchising a new XP software pack at cost of around £90 (I can't imagine they are) or am I yet again missing something?

You can easily use a Linux system on AOL. You do not even need to use any AOL software on your Windows PC, in fact it's best if you don't. The router makes the connection and your devices simply connect to the router painlessly, either via WiFi or Ethernet.

I'm sure other people will comment, but IMHO, I think that most will stick with the Linux OS, it's great (with the aformentioned limitations), for most tasks that people will be expecting/know about ....

I'm not an AOL fan - could you guess?

Regarding AOL - are you out of contract?, would you consider changing ISP? (as there are numerous others which are far cheeper and less hassle (with regards restricting you with software etc) than AOL?

Depending how your AOL setup is configured, it IS possible to connect to a wireless router and browse without having to use the AOL software on an AOL provided serice (although they will not support this ..... it's not in their standard script, nor does it go through their suite of parental controls/monitoring software), I know this as I frequently visit friends who have AOL, and I don't need a client on my laptop, and I did'nt (and would'nt !! - install any AOL software!) ....
  • Neither Warrington or Birchwood Asda stores have any in stock - though Birchwood did say they were expecting some more.
I was surprised at how definite they were at their denial of stock; apparently they've had other people asking for them too

I think i'll ring around a few more local stores tomorrow, as after having a little play with one in Comet it seemed a realy funky toy for a techy geek like myself. (though tbh with all the other pcs in the house I realy don't need it :p)

This is what I did I am with bt wireless and I just turned on netbook clicked connection icon in system tray and it had my broadband in the list of wireless networks it was picking up. I clicked on my network and put in wireless key from the bottom of my router and I was connected -- very easy.

    Fantastic - glad you're online ok ....

I would suggest running a liveupdate, although this takes ages - so best doing it later when you dont want to play with it !!

Regarding Norton, its most definatly for XP, therefore won't work on Linux anyway !!

Thank you for your help, just need to get used to key board now.

So I don't need any internet security or do I need different internet security?

One last question before I go get it tomorrow! lol

I'm on Virgin broadband with my laptop, and I have installed a USB dongle and wireless router thingy (well, my best mate did it for me...). I access the internet by typing in my encryption password.
Can anyone confirm this netbook will work the same way? With Virgin?
    Many thanks!

Yes .... i'm on VM and it works perfectly .... just make sure you know your wireless network name (SSID) and the key .... then enter this when prompted (earlier posts mention the steps required), you should be connected within minutes ....
