check the Acer website for spec, but looking at the unit it has a LAN port on the side, so it should work ok with a standard ethernet wired connection.

worked instantly. it was just plug in ethernet and bingo online.
  • i bought one of these in PC World last week for £199! Gutted i missed out on this deal. I use it for typing lecture notes and surfing on the move. It's really speedy but did crash on me once and I left it hours before finally giving in and switching it off at the button.

I'm having problems connecting it to the university wireless network though because it has limited adjustable settings in the wireless settings area.

to connect to the uni's wireless network we aren't given the WAP code but our own user name and password but there is nowhere for me to type it in.

    any ideas?

I suggest you get over to PC World right now! as their 110% price match is valid for upto 7 days after purchase.

This depends on what your Uni is using .... i'm sure there will be wireless for connectivity, to verify you as a valid user, they are probably using the username/password to validate your session (just like purchasing internet access in a hotel or hotspot) .... I would suggest contacting your IT department, they always produce help guides for situations like this, alternativly take the netbook into them - i'm sure they will relish a challange.

You could also try afew things (a) connect to the WiFi point that belongs to the Uni (assuming this is unencrypted - there will be no padlock), (b) then try to start a browser session, at this point to may be asked to verify yourself.

Alternativly they may not permit connections via wireless - best to check with IT, or look for on-line user guides and i'm sure they can help you .... if you have a link to the uni's IT area (public facing), we can see what it looks like exists and how/if you can connect.

    Hope that helps.

If you want to get a 3G dongle (Vodaphone or other) working under Linux you'll need (a) drivers/source code etc for the 3G dongle you have (b) reasonably technically aware and prepared to play with some settings - installing a non-standard product under Linux is not as straightforward as running a setup.exe file in XP/Vista !)

my earlier posts mention what the vanilla Asda machine is great for (3G card compatablity IS an issue) .... like you - I also have a Vodaphone 3G dongle I would like to use on the aspire, but have issues getting it to work under Linux (currently reading loads of technical forums on understaning how/if it can be done). Otherwise it might be a move to XP !

If you have a Huawei 3G modem it might work on the aspire, but you'll need to do a live update first (under the settings option), the next issue might be the connect s/w ....

Thanks for various replies to my earlier queries. Spent best part of yesterday evening and today considering changing the OS from Linux to Windows to overcome the problem with my ISP (AOL) not accepting Linux systems, only to realise that I cannot install the XP that is on my desktop (which I would be continuing to use) onto the laptop, as the product key limits it to one computer. How is everyone else managing to change OS? Are they purchising a new XP software pack at cost of around £90 (I can't imagine they are) or am I yet again missing something?
