Landlord refuses to fix washing machine

    Ask your local council if they hold a list of landlords and if they run a scheme. They might not, but it's worth asking.

    Okay, that is interesting. As I said, before I go making any rash demands of anyone I will talk to a solicitor to find out how best to handle the situation from a legal perspective.

    Unfortunatley it is about whether they want to do it, and in this case it appears they dont. If they dont want to then you must do it yourself as advised.

    No, they must repair things that are listed in the inventory. It is part of the responsibilities of being a landlord. It makes me angry when people decide to become a landlord then refuse to do anything about their responsibilities.

    I have had to fight for everything in the flat I am in, had to get the HSE involved to get my gas safety cert, had to fight for ages to get my shower to give me hot water :mad:

    Get the right people involved and you find things get sorted out pronto ;) I'm just not sure who those people are because it isn't a health risk.

    Piggles, you should phone Shelter, it's a freephone number and they can tell you exactly what you should do/who to go to.

    I've phoned them a few times and the advice is spot on :)

    Yes they must. That is not in question (I thought I had established this in my 1st & 2nd posts?). Now we have established they must repair it, how do you go about forcing them to? you cannot. Therefore its about whether they want to do it or not. If they do not, as appears the case, you must make threating noises about doing it yourself and follow through if no result. There are no 'relevant' people to get involved in this particular instance, it is only a washing machine after all.

    Of course you can. There are organisations out there to make sure a landlord does what s/he is supposed to.

    If all else fails, the courts would make him fix the thing ;)

    No there arent in this case. There are organisations that can give you advice (Shelter, CAB, the Council), but there are none that can force the landlord to repair the washer, it is only a washer after all. They can advise you to make the repair yourself and subsequently deduct the cost from the rent, they can write letters to the landlord (I doubt they will) saying that its his obligation to repair the washer, but they cannot force someone to do this particular repair if they dont want to.
