Ring the CAB and ask them for the rules of how you go about sorting out a repair.

Or you could just put some hot water and washing power in the machine for an overnight soak and then if that doesn't work try some laundry bleach and another hot wash.
The longer it's gone on the worse the problem has probably got.

    Yes they probably will.

But then they may not provide an adequate reference for my next rental property and the landlord may refuse to renew my tenancy (which I really would like to avoid).

I have contacted the CAB and they advised me to try to negotiate with the landlor, which is what Planner and I are discussing! As I am in the private rental sector this is really all that I can do. If I rented from the council, this whole process would be much easier as I would not have to worry about references or contract renew- oh the joys of social mobility!

I may try leaving some powder in there to soak overnight, but I am sceptical about whether this will work and I am reluctant to use bleach for the reasons mentioned above!

This is what the letting agent is now proposing to do.

I'll bet you 10p one of the things the repairperson will say is "it's not been used for 12 months" and "put some bleach down it, it'll be right."
    :)
Either that or they'll pull out the filter and find worms living it in :-)

On the standards doc from our local council for landlords::

    Portable Appliance Testing
Portable electrical appliances provided by the owner (e.g. fridges, microwave ovens, tumble dryers etc,) must be kept in functional and safe working order and be visually inspected on a regular basis for defects and repaired or replaced as necessary. It is recommended that a Portable Appliance Test (PAT) be carried out on earthed equipment (class 1) e.g. irons and kettles at intervals of not more than 2 years by a competent electrician. Appropriate certificates shall be kept available for inspection by the Landlord Accreditation team on request.

Your council might not have the same thing - and your landlord doesn't have to abide by it, but if you're going to move you could ask the council if they have a list of landlords registered with them, or ask landlords if they are registered with the council.

It has been used in the last 12 months- the previous tenants only move out of here in September and then I used the machine in early December.
I am willing to use bleach, as long as the repair person gives it their approval!!

Get a pair of meole grips and remove the cap yourself. Clean out the filter. Run the machine on hottest wash. Should sort it.
    Happy chappy
