  • Martin pointed out a few months ago that this site is about money saving so service features have got to be secondary which is a fair point but if you plan to go with a cheap provider it may be worth putting some monetary value to the time you may waste on technical support lines when things go wrong - Not to mention 0870 numbers and speaking o people with poor English.

I'm with Zen who are not cheap but their UK based support is so good they have ended up helping me with network issues that were not really their responsibility.

  • They looked good to me too. The thing that swung it for me is that adslguide.com rated them as clearly better in all categories than Tiscali. Still, I havent been connected yet so have my fingers crossed that it's as good as it looks.
    The offer is still open.

It's still open (no, I'm not on commission) - this update is to say that, like Tubster, I've had no problems at all. Everything was set up within the promised time frame and it's been great since. If you can afford the initial outlay, I don't think there's a cheaper 1meg deal out there.

I should say, it's the Euro1net deal I'm talking about.
£240 for 2 years 1 meg unlimited downloads - free modem and connection, so £10 per month equivalent.

Anyone who signs up and pays for 2 years in advance, needs their head examined. Not because of the money, using a CC takes care of that (if they let you use one), but look at the 'E7even service update' thread to see the problems that can arise.
Loads of customers locked in, no srvice and cannot get their MAC codes to go elsewhere. Not for me, in fact I will not sign up for 1 year in advance, too risky unless it was with one of the major ISPs.

My brother is thinking about getting broadband and I remember seeing bulldog (use to be cable and wireless) advertise.

Found this link on the internet:

put it this way - our student union warned all students to avoid bulldog - there must be a reason. Lots of students signing up and having no broadband for months.

Now that seems too good to be true to me.

    Now what's that expression .......................?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi,

I heard on the radio that Carphone Warehouse will be offering free broadband with the TalkTalk package. Of course, it remains to be seen if that will actually make it the cheapest, but expect a price war.

The CarPhone Warehouse offer is a seriously tempting deal. You have to sign for 18 months, but for that you get
unlimited UK landline calls, also international calls to 28 countries, including the EU, Oz, NZ & USA. Free Broadband
for £20.99 per month including line rental. I might wait until the "price war" starts but it is a very good offer.

It includes line rental as well as calls and broadband, which makes it very good value as you have to add that on to most other broadband suppiers' costs.

However, switching line rental to them may stop you using over-ride numbers when calling mobiles etc. It would be interesting to see if anyone comes up with anything cheaper. Now, where is that Martin fellow...
  • Hi

Just a quick note to let you know Martin's reviewing the TalkTalk offer and waiting to get some questions answered. We'll let you know as soon as we have some answers :)
