I've tried about 4 very cheap broadband offers, but struggled with them actually meeting the 512mbs or 1Mb offers.

Quality versus price versus service, I'd go for https://www.plus.net everyday. I'm on 2Mb (uncapped) at £15 a month now, and they're the best company and best service I've ever had in 6 years of Broadband, and they're a British company...

Please explain - according to their website an uncapped 2mb connection will cost you a minimum of £21.99/month! Their capped service is £14.99.

... all valid points my friend. BUT the point of this website is to SAVE MONEY and although you've got yourself a good deal with AOL, you're spending £120 each year more than ISPs such as V21 for the same level of service. I've got myself a reasonable deal with PlusNet for £15 per month and have been with them for about 3 years.... but this website has shown me that I can save over £60 per year by either migrating to a service such as V21 or trying to negotiate a better deal with PlusNet.

  • When siging up to new Broadband providers, please don't be fooled by the "No Cap" statements that many are now making. All but a very small minority have a "Fair Usage" policy which is simply a Cap in disguise.

When Plusnet introduced their "Fair Usage" policy, it was mid billing cycle for many users, they had the cheek to insist that although they had only just intoduced it, it would count for the whole of that month. If you had heavy usage prior to the annoncement, then they immedialty impossed restrictions. They have to be currently the worts ISP for constantly changing the rules and moving the goal posts at a whim.

With Broadband, cheapest is not always best. I moved to Zen, admittedly one of the dearest, but for good reason, no other provider can offer the guarantees that Zen do. Many "pretend" to, hiding behind "Fair Usage" policy hidden deep in the small print.

    Pipex have Fair Usage
Freedom to Surf have one (Since Pipex took them over)
    Tiscali have one

    The list goes on.
  • Dear Chaps and Chapettes! ;)

I've currently got my broadband through talktalk paying £14.99 a month for 1Mbps unlimited connection (I'm sure it's not that fast though really).

I already have my own ADSL modem and wireless router, so I don't need a deal with one thrown in (although I suppose I could sell it on ebay!)

I'm wondering about these new 8Mb services but am unsure about what's the best one to try. I don't want to spend too much more than I do currently. My 12 month contract ends on 31st March 2006 (It was activated on 31st March 2005) and if I switch before then they'll charge me £60!

I've heard bad reviews about bulldog and I'm not sure that changing my phone provider over from talktalk would be a better move or not. I'm also wondering about providers with 1 month contracts rather than getting tied in.

I need a fast connection because I'm starting to do some freelance presentation design work from home in the evenings and at weekends.

Is the madasafish a good one to go with - and does the "free migration" mean that I won't have to pay the £60 to leave talktalk?

Without seeing what you signed up to with Pipex it is difficult to say. However, unless you've got 2 telephone lines, you'll only have one BB connection and can therefore only sign up with one ISP at a time. Therefore, if you attempt to sign up with Madasafish, they'll begin procedures to cut off your connection with Pipex and this could break you current contract with Pipex..... plus any penalties for coming out of your contract early. Best wait until 2/3 to be on the safe side.
