So tomorrow morning (assuming the deal is still on) do I asusme there will be a queue of people at every till at every store clutching their expensive bottles of wine to them?

Without giving me any other pointers I still think 'any' covers 'any' bottle of wine.

I am a stock control manager for a Scottish store, thats about as much as I will tell you. Its more of an annoyance when people think they can take advantage of obvious mistakes. Yes everyone will scream at me "how am I supposed to know," but it wouldn't wash with me, if a customer was pretty genuine then in the interests of customer service I'd allow them a bottle, but picking up a £15 bottle is a bit extreme.

And for Bumble, no I'm not a glorified shelf stacker, stock control managers are actually the people who order the stock and try to make sure that the products are available in store, so my job is actually more office based, however that said, I'm not scared of going to fill a shelf.

I think the point is though that a customer may not think it was a mistake. I would actually think that there is no way it could be a mistake because a company as large as Tesco wouldn't make a mistake like that. Surely the signage would have been signed off by several people for approval?

It is comparable to the Lush offer. Not sure of specifics but something like "spend over £20 get any product free". That includes £99 gift boxes and isn't a mistake. However it could appear to some that it is a mistake.

Your post implies that any offers that seem too good to be true are mistakes. That isn't always the case.

No, what I meant by that is that it is a human being who makes the POS and it is a human who puts it out. Mistakes can be made. That said however, I didn't realise how emotive a thread this would turn out to be and apologise if I've annoyed anyone. All I ask of people is remember that mistakes can happen, I've dealt with too many "customers" who demand the earth when something goes wrong.

In the interests of reconciliation my advice is that if you are going to argue the point about this or any other offer, pay for it first then take it to the customer service desk, that way you can claim double the difference.

I'm a life long cynic so I expect CG19a has already tipped his bosses off about this mistake therefore they'll be hundreds of managers running around like headless chickens removing the signs as I type!

However, although mistakes can happen, isn't it the case that Tesco had to offer R&R because they were making so many mistakes and ripping off so many customers that they were in danger of sanction from TS?
And Tesco still regularly mis-price and overcharge.
Perhaps they would make fewer mistakes if more of their profit was diverted to getting things right?
A customer who picks up an item clustered with dozens the same with a price label of £1, who is then charged £1.30 may well get their 30p back in most cases, but how many customers will have not realised that what they thought was £1 was actually charged at £1.30? There are plenty of cases where Tesco are not even giving DtD of mis-prices.

You really need to try putting yourself in the shoes of a customer. It says a lot for the attitude of some Tesco managers that you responded in the way you did.

Yes, while I'm currently sitting here typing this I've phoned up head office to tell them - yeah right. I wouldn't be surprised if it has already been reported to head office due to the guys in here (at least indirectly). When ever we discover an error in POS it will be removed and fed back to head office so that it can be worded correctly.

& why shouldn't he? if it was your company that had made a (genuine?) mistake, would you happily pay the cost?

What's your line of employment me4bargains?

As a Tesco manager I relish you coming into my store. It would give me some entertainment for the day.

If that is your attitude to customers then you should be reprimanded.

Yeah I'm never a customer anywhere.

The refund and retain is essentially a gesture of goodwill and not an admission of fault (although I may be wrong, this bit is for the legal dept) so customers could still go trading standards. Its a policy in place as mistakes can happen and I know Asda operates a similar policy(or at least used to). If you come into my store, I can assure you that you would receive double the difference on any misprices unless it is suspected that the customer is trying to take advantage, in that case they will receive just the difference. Unfortunately people do try to take advantage, but bear in mind I'm talking about my store and my views etc are not to be taken as Tesco fact etc as on here I don't represent the company.
