At my local, the offer is still up, saying "any bottle of wine", but in the fridge, beneath the food are two types of wine - a red and a white. Both £4.49, I think. However, neither of them is a "Finest" wine. And it's supposed to be a "Finest" meal deal.

Same here. I asked someone if I could choose another wine as I (genuinely) only really like rose/merlot and I was told ANY.

I went to the CS desk because it didn't scan through, and the woman was an ogre, really nasty. I asked to speak to HO and she eventually gave in and let me speak to Dundee; lovely man on the phone was about to let me AND suggested DTD because she'd made me wait 40 minutes at this point, and then when he was telling her, she starts going off on one, so I gave up and asked for the lot to be refunded. Their attitude is appalling, oh and I had also asked if I could choose a vegetarian (as part of my new years resolutions I went veggie) main course, and again was told ANY, and then dragon woman would not let me have that either. I am actually upset, and they can shove their offer but I am writing to HO to praise the Dundee man and to inform them that the CS woman needs some serious retraining.

PS not all stores have the offer; Old Swan in Liverpool do NOT.
  • PPS I genuinely MUCH prefer M&S food anyway, and am now reverting to ONLY buying reduced/special offer items from Tesco.
  • I know it's early days but I have a feeling Tesco are very much 'on the slide'. I have to be honest and say it will serve them right. Incredibly arrogant retailer IME.
    Call me Carmine....

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • Good, maybe they'll learn to value their customers. Asda is nearer me and is cheaper but I make the effort to go to Tesco to use my Clubcard and because they have some good reductions but CS is so much better in Asda. My favourite is Waitrose, and although Ocado delivers in my area, I prefer going to the shop in person...

timviola - I get that. I used inverted commas as I totally agree, there is no wrong bottle, really, I just meant, 'one which might get flagged up at the till', if you see what I mean.

I'm not trying to get into the ins and outs of this particular offer as I don't know how it works, but I was merely addressing we are always skint's point. Politely pointing out that the sign has no restrictions might get you further than kicking up a fuss - it's not a deal given based on how you dress/look.

Errm - why should you NEED to - kick up a fuss/politely enquire/somewhere in between - why you actually aren't getting that which you have just been persuaded to buy?

Why are you reading this thread, then, if we're all insatiable? Why are you even on MONEYSAVINGEXPERT.com? There's a big clue in the name...and if we were doing anything that wrong, illegal or immoral, do you not think that Martin and the team would clamp down on it by removing posts/threads and warning/banning members? If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all, and if it offends you, either ignore it or report it.

I do not work for tesco and dont really shop in there often but seriously this is insane.

It is crap advertising and im sure its in breach of trading law but if I pointed this out to a manager I'd expect him to appologise say there has been a major mistake ring up head office inform them and take down the signs, perhaps if I was really lucky some sort of voucher as way of an appology for the mistake.

Obviously several people have messed up but for people to give managers hell for it is wrong and in my opinion is immoral. Morality is something that is subjective and so is not defined.

Long and short of it is if you really dont like tesco and the mis prices etc then dont shop there. That will make the biggest statement of all because if tesco arnt making money then serious changes will need to be made.
  • I didn't give them hell. As a trained conflict management instructor, I kept my calm at all times, was polite and restrained. In fact, I lowered my voice to placate the shouting CS woman and to stop getting attention from other shoppers. I was humiliated. I tried to argue my case and work with the CS to reach an agreement but they were being completely out of order, to be frank.

I wasnt saying you particularly gave them hell but I know that people do. I have worked in a shop (one which was praised earlier in this thread for lack of errors) and mistakes like this are made. As staff we try to rectify mistakes as soon as possible but a lot of things are beyond our controll.

Surely its similar to online misprices like that coffee table a few weeks ago it was priced at £0 but was actually £2000 or something like that. People didnt get angry when their orders were cancelled and go to them demanding the table. Just because its a supermarket doesnt mean people have the right to get really angry at a mistake.

How horrible you felt humiliated. That is awful. Mostly I find shop staff fine. There are a few grumpy ones but I try to take it with a pinch of salt. A couple of times I've felt people were incredibly rude (like the woman in PC World who, when I asked if we could bring something back if it was wrong said "No, we don't support ignorance, you know" and then seemed amazed we were taken aback by her rudeness) and if I've felt strongly about it, I've asked to speak to the manager - not to rant but to let them know what my experience as a customer has been like and to suggest that in some cases, a little training might be in order.

But I am really sorry to hear about your experience because that should never happen. My daughter doesn't like to damage her Karma by wishing bad things on people but does sometimes hope someone who's been rude will trip over and land on gravel, scraping the palms of their hands a bit which she thinks is a very painful injury. If they've been REALLY rude, she hopes there will be something smelly that they fall in as well. Maybe you could use that as a visualisation?:D

When I worked in Tesco many years ago, it was all automated from when the items went through the tills, they automatically got reordered.

Surely Tescos wouldn't take a step back if the technology is there?

Also... surely this would have nothing to do with you if a customer came in for this, it would be the overall manager of the store or a checkout manager that dealt with it, so how would it provide you amusement?

Well this confused me as well ..... as one of the group of salesman working for a very large American computer company we sold Tesco the POS system (from memory) back in 1977. It certainly told HO whenever someone bought a can of beans then - so what happened since?
