Please help my dog attacked another dog..

Hiya my dog is a labrador cross and the other dog is a small yappy one i dont know which breed, but it is normally quite vicious when we take our dog on walks constantly barking at anything and does go for people as well as others dogs too.
x
Well our Border wants to kill the new neighbours dog (she is not yappy but very territorial) and the neighbours dog is big cross don't know what but brindle staffie/dalmation/labrador etc which could deal with the Border no problem.
The trouble is they never let the dog out and they have never been intoduced so they are always aggresive towards each other. Our set up although slightly different is similar and as far as we are concerned all the dogs (3 families and 5 dogs) need to get on. They have their moments with a bit of growling and snarling but they sort it out. Just wish the neighbours with the cross would chill out I have already told them if their is a fight not to worry as we would expect them to pay to no avail.
The good thing is the other owner seems to know the score but gets hard if there is a repeat performance.
Good luck.0 -
I have fixed the door problem in the kitchen by putting round door handle on as i doubt my dog can open them as she has not thumbs, the reason she could open it before was it was a normal door and she figured out she could stand on her hind legs and push the handle down with both front paws
My Springer learned from about 5 months old that he could "leap at the door" and tap the cottage style latch and ..... hey presto ... the door would open.
Cue to tear up to mummy's room and lie on her bed all day
By the time I'd realised he could do it, it was too late - he'd "learned" the drill. Now, he has the run of the house and if he sleeps on my bed, so be it. I'd rather he is not stressed whilst in the house alone as a stressed dog, alone in the house, can be ssssoooooo destructive!
Fact is, he's not stressed at all - but that's perhaps because I let him do whatever it is that gives him "comfort".
I'm not the world's greatest dogowner, but I have a happy, friendly dog - but he'll still defend himself when the need arises. I can't and would never attempt to train that out of him. Next door has a "mental case" of a dog - poor thing; they think it has brain damage from a collision with a car. That might be so, but it just goes for everything passing by the gate (it's secured, in their garden). I've finally persuaded them to let us walk the dogs together. There's lots of snarling and snapping to start off with, but they just settle down eventually and I'm confident that they will get used to eachother, in the end.
FWIW, I might be a c r a p dogowner, but from everything you say, you don't have anything to be too concerned about. Yes - be responsible - but you can't take responsibility for animal instincts. Nor, IMHO, should you attempt to - if your dog is/was attacked, you want it to defend itself.
Good luck

My situation exactly.
My Springer and next door's dog have a bit of "handbags" to start off with, but settle down eventually. I'd sooner have some "natural antics" under my supervision, rather than an unsupervised incident.
IMHO, you should "keep on" at the neighbours as I genuinely believe that the dogs will reach an understanding with eachother. Whatever you do - and I think you know this - introduce them on common, neutral ground - not on eachother's territory!!!Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Yeah i mean my dog is lovely and is a very friendly dog but she would defend the house if there was an intruder, the same as if a dog growled at her she would sort them out, i just dont want it happening again. Do you think dogs can open a round handled door, i said if she can im selling her to the circus lol as thats a skill, the main thing that annoys me is some times when she escapes its becuase people are stupid and leave the door open even tho by now we have drilled it into them that this is not acceptable. as its a farm if she finds sheep and takes one down she will get shot and i dont want that for the poor little thing. xx:jHas saved so much money since joining this forum, thanks to all you kind people out there :j0

hmmm i'd be willing to walk my Dog with another but there's no way in hell i'd let them sort it out themselves! The damage mine could do to another is scary to even think about, and I wouldn't care if the other owner said they'd sort Vet bills, isn't that like dog fighting?! I couldn't stand & watch mine lay into another dog knowing i'd allowed them to 'sort it out themselves' & also I wouldn't want mine bitten, that just teaches her that it's ok to bite other Dogs etc
I'm sorry if that's not what you meant, but the bit about vet bills makes it seem like it is. Definitely a very bad idea & not one that should be tested.0 -

She doesn't even have to take one down to be shot, legally a farmer can just because she 'worries' the sheep, which can even be by being in the same field! I shouldn't think she'd be able to open that but who knows! lol0 -
yeah we have tested it by leaving her in the kitchen and shouting her from outside and she just struggles, so i think it will be ok. Yeah i agree about letting dogs sort it out themselves, but one of the most important things is not to interfere with dogs when they are fighting as they could turn and get you in the heat of the moment which could bring a whole new kettle of fish to the table. my dog fights with the other dog in the house sometimes as the other dog is a JR and is very territorial and starts most of the fights, its scary but hard as you dont know what to do!:jHas saved so much money since joining this forum, thanks to all you kind people out there :j0

hmm if you let them sort it out themselves both of you may have a huge Vet bill, one may be killed & i'd hope the Vet reports to RSPCA! You can't 'let' your dog attack another, they might never like each other or 'sort it out'.0

i have never 'let' my dog attack another dog on purpose, both of the dogs are mine anyway, why have you started a conversation about this anyway?:jHas saved so much money since joining this forum, thanks to all you kind people out there :j0

I think you are grabbing the wrong end of the stick here. Where we live (in the country) yoiu have many dogs, if its not the farm dogs then it can be motley collection gundogs and others many of whom have never met. Rules of the game state the had better get on and in most instances they do. But one dog will stick his nose to close to another and will be growled or snapped at. They soon learn their place.
On the odd ocassion you will get two dogs normally big dominant males who will be set on killing each other usually when one or both is on the lead. Hopefully a swift skelp also sorts that out.
If a dog remains aggressive it would not be very politic to keep bringing it.
But at the end of the day the dogs sort it out amongst themselves and then get on with the job in hand.
No one is advocating letting the dogs have a free for all. But dogs are are like children and need to learn to sort things out and get on with life.0
