Please help my dog attacked another dog..

  • It's too late to take any action as the dog will not associate it with the attack. what about making sure it is not put and in the same position again? In any event, there is no indication that the dog has done anything wrong.

On that point - the other dog was actually trespassing. was it? I thought it lived on the same land It was the other dog that was clearly out of control, being allowed to wander on someone else's land, unrestrained.

I live in a rural area and just about everyone here has a dog. This would be a complete non-event in our village. Rightly so, IMHO

Well, I would try and prevent this happening again personally!

First off, rehoming wouldn't solve anything, it'd just pass off the problem to another family or rescue & i'm actually shocked you'd consider sending her to be rehomed. Can the door not be locked if she can open it? Does she live as part of the family? It's good you're paying the Vet bill, the other Owner may have been ok because he lives on your land & didn't want trouble, however he may NOT be ok.

How would you make sure the dog is not put in the same position again?

OP said that the incident occurred "on our land" - perhaps they own the land jointly with the other person; perhaps either you or I have misunderstood.

    It's a complete non-incident IMHO - just a case of a dog defending itself/its territory. It's what dogs do.

can we also remember the poor dog that got hurt in this non event!!

The Op says "She is a very clever dog and knows how to open front door, well she did this last night whilst we were out and let herself out into the garden" - well the easy answer is stop her from being able to get out when she is supposed to be inside! She clearly was not supposed to be outside guarding the land!

OP said that the incident occurred "on our land" - perhaps they own the land jointly with the other person; perhaps either you or I have misunderstood.
The OP says "she attacked a dog that belongs to someone who lives in a house on our farm" - so they were not trespassing - they live there.

It's a complete non-incident IMHO - just a case of a dog defending itself/its territory. Its also the other dogs territory -he lives there too, and its owner has a right to be out with his dog without being approached by an unaccompanied dog who ends up scrapping with his and injuring it! It's what dogs do.

It may be "what dogs do" - if you let them - however, it is not good for the dog to be allowed to keep attacking this dogs, or other dogs, (especially if you ever want to take it anywhere where there are other dogs) and may well antagonise the neighbours - and let's hope no one tries to seperate fighting dogs and ends up getting bitten.

I hate it when threads turn into two posters disagreeing with eachother, so I won't keep on at this. But ......

Anyway to cut a long a story short she attacked a dog that belongs to someone who lives in a house on our farm

but i want to know where we stand ie legally, it was on our land

Im just scared, and also i dont know what to do about my dog, its so unlike her and she has never attacked anything before.

Preventing the dog from getting out of the house into its own garden/land will not stop it from defending itself in the future. If - and we don't know this for sure - the dog was defending itself, you will never train that out of the dog. No dog is going to roll over and allow itself to be attacked.

This was unusual behaviour for this dog - hence my strong suspicion that this was an act of defence rather than aggression. It matters not though - we're not dealing with an aggressive out of control dog with a history of repeatedly attacking other animals - and the dog was on its owner's land so there is no "public" issue either.

I really thing we're making too much out of this ;)

    Hello everyone,

I need some advice, my boyfriend lives on a farm and our dog is always shut in the kennel except sometimes some people get home early and let her into the house.

    can you please clarify this?

does the dog live inside or out?

who are the people that let her into the house?

Incidentally, only a sheep-owner can shoot a dog and ONLY if the dog is causing the sheep distress. Even then, the farmer is still open to prosecution.
I too, live in a rural area.

However, nothing in our hamlet of 20 houses would ever be a "non-event"
Least of all a dog attack/fight, or indeed anything involving an animal.

You sound so stressed OP, and there is probably no need.

The owner of the other dog is a tenant on your land? The dog strayed on to your property and your dog bit it? The owner of that dog seems to accept culpability and you are paying towards it treatment.
    So why worry?
ETA. Farm dogs guard their property. A Border Collie who will lick your hand in the presence of its owner will certainly not welcome you approaching its domain, even when chained.

ok the house has about 6 other occupants, and my dog lives in her kennel during the day as the front door does not lock properly she and the other dog in the house somehow manage to get it open, this is a problem that is to be dealt with immediatley. Most of the time my dog lives in the house so she does have a lot of human contact, everyday in fact she is only put in the kennel when people are out. When she is inside the house people often forget to shut the front door and and the kitchen door, even though i have reminded them time and time again to shut the door as my dog escapes something doesnt click. So she does have a lot of human contact and I dont want to have to put her in the kennel constantly.

In regards to the other persons dog, he is fine, and he lives on our land in a farm cottage, so all of the land is owned by my boyfriends parents, the dogs owners story doesnt really match with what is round the farm so we cant be sure which dog started it as of course you are going to stick up for your own dog.

Thank you everyone for your help, I just dont know what to do in the long run as things are complicated at home and I dont want to have to get rid of my beloved dog. Is it too old to train her with obedience classes, she is 2?

    Thanks again everyone
