Please help my dog attacked another dog..

  • I bet you've never seen a child with their cheek ripped open by a friendly dog, so please don't lecture me on what I can and cannot say here or anywhere else.

Oh come on - I have worked in the NHS and seen some horrible non-accidental injuries caused by parents - does that mean all parents are bad? - of course not. You have got to have some perspective.

You've just proved my point dwileflunker, thank you.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

I agree entirely, but this thread was about dog attacks, albeit dog on dog, and unfortunately nobody knows when a dog is going to turn from being pet pooch to vicious menace. No doubt the dog in the original post was just protecting it's territory but what if instead of another dog it had been a child. I would certainly advocate having some of those bad parents you mention put down, but you and I know that isn't going to happen.

Brother was eleven, I was three!. Would be child cruelty now. Then it was fun. Food was still rationed, as soon after WW2. Lots of people grew stuff.

We had a Golden Cocker Spaniel, only answerable to mum. Brother and me would attempt to walk her, but once out of sight of the house she would sit and refuse to budge. Much to the amusement of the other kids and needless to say our shame.
Snappy too. Due to so much inbreeding to fulfil demand for the nation's favourite dog. (Think it was due to a Hollywood film, later overtaken by Wire Haired Terrier)
The horses then were workers. Delivering coal, milk whatever.
They'd stop for a break, eating from a nosebag.
Perhaps a bottom bag would have been appropriate too Berty.
    Wonder if such things existed?
( Hope those nappies are small and not the adult size Berty)

I had a recent trip to Marrakesh and by law all the horses there have to have what you call bottom bags, so they do exist. There are lots of horse and carriages taking tourist around the town and no horsemuck anywhere.

I have now owned dogs for 40 years and I have 3 children and 3 grandchildren lots of children have visited my house and my dogs have been used as pat dogs visiting hospitals and nursing homes, not once have they shown aggression to people ,but they have given a lot of pleasure to people and have kept me and my children very fit over the years .My german shepherd came from a litter where 3 went as guide dogs and 4 males went to work with the police ,so not all dogs are bad and they do in fact also do a lot of good for society .The problem is bad owners taking on a dog and not having a clue on how to handle and train them this is what needs changing .

I understand where you are coming from but the owner of the dog in the o/p thought they had a dog like yours. Can you 100% guarantee that your dog would never under any circumstances attack another dog or person? I'm sure you'll say you can and you'd probably be right, but deep down I bet you can't. I think that any dog that has attacked another dog or person should be put down even if the fault is down to the owner.

  • No reason why it would, it's a dog that has come onto the OP's dogs territory by the sound of it, many dogs would do the same, kids don't need to come into EVERY discussion about Dogs surely?!
    :T
Oh, if only people listened to you on the last page!! lol:rotfl:

But, we are getting off track here, there is no real link between dog to dog aggression and dog to human aggression, so lets leave it at that shall we...

However, I do believe the OP needs to address this, as obviously it's less than ideal to have a dog that can let itself out when it wants to, and ends up taking a costly nibble at someone elses dog, which had every right to be there...

So, OP have you had any luck in finding a dog training class, or dog trainer locally?

I agree that a dog that will attack people should be PTS ,but it is a little different a dog defending its space from another dog as this is natural ,what is needed is people to have better understanding on a dogs body language and to understand that a dog is an animal and not a cuddly toy to be molly coddled ,all dogs should know their place in the pack and that is at the bottom ,not allowed on furniture ,not to be fed at the dinner table etc ,I think a lot of problems with dogs today are the owners who treat them as children when they are puppies and the result is uncontrollable adult dogs who end up confused they need to know who their owners are, a happy well mannered dog is a well trained controlled dog who knows his place.

Can we get back on track?

OP first thing you need to do is sort out the door so that the dog cannot open it (some sort if catch or spring might do the trick).

You can then decide how you go about dealing with trhe dog some socialising and classes might help. But you need to be proactive on this and decide on your course of action should it happen again.

What type of dogs are we talking about by the way?

Hiya my dog is a labrador cross and the other dog is a small yappy one i dont know which breed, but it is normally quite vicious when we take our dog on walks constantly barking at anything and does go for people as well as others dogs too.

I have fixed the door problem in the kitchen by putting round door handle on as i doubt my dog can open them as she has not thumbs, the reason she could open it before was it was a normal door and she figured out she could stand on her hind legs and push the handle down with both front paws, we have also got a lock for people to latch to keep her in at night. we tried a spring but it ripped some of the door offas its not proper wood, i wanted to put 2 door handles on to be safe but boyfriend no as it would annoy people.

So hopefully this will work, as she wont be able to open the door herself any longer it is now down to thoughtless human error, as some people just dont know how to shut a door and as i am not there all the time i cannot prevent this except for putting a big sign on the door, but even then it gets ignored!

Thanks for all helpful replies im really grateful
