Ok peeps, I'm just about to push the buttons to book our NY break at the Hotel Beacon in August...has anyone stayed there? am I doing the right thing?!!! it's a one bedroom suite with two double beds, a separate living room with a foldout sofa, full kitchen and marble bath. The rate for the suite is $255.00 per night, plus tax ($298.84 inclusive – US dollars)

Flights with Virgin cost £508 each from London

Is this about what most people pay?

    Hi all,
I am off to NYC for the first time for 5 nights with my dd1 on Saturday, leaving Heathrow at 17.30 by American Airlines. We are staying at the Wellington Hotel, has anyone stayed there? How long is the journey from JFK to the Hotel? After arriving the following morning at 1am will the clock go forward the same as here?
Really getting excited about the trip and have enjoyd reading through this thread about the exciting places to go and things to do etc.

1 - i'm unsure what you mean by arriving at 1am, will the clock go forward???

There is currently a 4 hour time difference between the UK and NYC, and NYC are 4 hours behind us, so your clock will go back 4 hours. When you return, your clock will go forward 4 hours.

anyway, your flight lands at 9.35pm NYC Time. it'll take around 1 hour to get out of the airport at the most, plus then about 45 minutes to get into manhattan, by subway or by taxi. if you choose the (not so) supershuttle, this could take up to an hour and a half, but, with the better options you'll arrive at your hotel by about 11.20pm.

2 - wellington hotel - never stayed there. so all i can do is go on the tripadvisor reviews, which are average. If you plan to be out and about, i don't think you have anything to worry about.

Ah, but British Summer Time starts on the last Sunday in March, so that would make either a 3 or a 5 hour time difference (sorry, can't work that kind of thing out at this time of night), unless the OP is asking whether they 'do' summer time in the USA.

unless you are booking something in advance why worry. driver on the plane will tell you the time when you get off not stayed in wellington but it is often pushed by tour ops or lastminute expedia etc . Good location i know where it is looks scruffy from the outside but seems clean enough for a bed to flop into. I think you will be good hope you have a great time

Oooh, I meant to say in my earlier post that we thought the Empire State Sky-ride was way over priced for what it was - I think we had to pay about $30 ish to go on this 7 minute ride, although that did include free popcorn and coca-cola.

The ride is a bit out-dated now (it's a wee bit similar to Soarin' at Epcot if you've ever been, but no where near as polished ... in fact, quite tatty).

Anyway, just my humble opinion ... might save someone quite a bit of money
  • Thanks markymoo and everyone for your help.
I was just thinking maybe in NYC they would put the clock forward one hour like we do here. I will ask at the hotel when we arrive.

thats a good amount and well done for thinking ahead have you used this method for payment of your holiday too and when you say 1400 each does that mean every one pays 1400 or like me was mrs-face and three young faces.(so 1400 each would have cost me 7k not 1400 each) We traveled to NYC in feb 07 when xchange rate was $2 so spent up on decent hotel and spent a small fortune on things to bring back for Auntie eBay and her brother Uncle Amazon it never paid for holiday but prob paid for the goods we brought back for personal. handbag sunglasses camcorder etc

It was £1400 each, so for me and my partner is was £2800, give or take.

We paid for our hotel in Boston up front. The hotel in NYC will be paid when we get there, but we changed our money last year when the rate was 1.89. All our spends have been changed as well. Staying with friends in Philly and Washington DC but staying in a hotel in AC.

I think the point people were making though is you said you were going this coming weekend and the clocks dont go forward until the following weekend when you'll be back in Blighty anyway.
  • I really think people are paying over the odds for hotels...there's some cracking deals on travelzoo, quikbooks and hotwire (easy to work out what hotel you're getting on hotwire if you visit betterbooking) I intend on paying no more then $130 for a 3.5-4 star hotel, for example, there is the Wyndham Garden Hotel going for $99 per night at the moment, gets great reviews on Trip Avisor, I know its not 100% THAT hotel, but quite a few powple have booked that deal and said its that. I also know it depends on the time of year you go, but even on trip advisor, they will tell you, the rates for hotels in Nw at the monet are the best they've been in a decade, so make sure you look around properly before you hit that 'book' button!
