You're talking about local sales tax by the sound of it, which has nowt to do with my line of work however you avoid local sales tax on footwear and clothing below $110:
What items are exempt from sales tax? All clothing and footwear, clothing material (fabric, thread, buttons, etc.), hats and neckwear (ties and scarves), formalwear (purchased), and diapers (including disposable diapers).
What items are not exempt from sales tax? Jewelry and watches, handbags, umbrellas, rented formalwear, sports equipment (pads, helmets, etc.), pet or doll clothes.
above that if memory serves its 8.325%, I may be 0.1% out though.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
TG for that.. Looking to only spend around £200 on clothes and stuff maximum while I'm accros, so that should be fine then..
For Phatbear: Am I allowed to go over without a suitcase and bring back a suitcase with some clothes in it under the value of £200?

Your current duty free limit from a non eu state is £340 per person, so £200 is'nt a problem in the least.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0

I didn't realise about the limits. So if I spent around £500 in clothes and stuff from the duty free shop, keep my receipts and tell the immigration man what I have spent how much will they charge me, or will they just take my stuff away from me? I live in the UK but am Canadian with Canadian passport.

Immigration, Immi-bloody-gration!!!!
Nope if you have goods to declare you approach a customs officer, they are easily differentiated from immigration officers as we are far better looking and, ermmmm well other things im not going to go into on here.
If you have goods which equate to more than £340 then you should present yourself, the outcome of not doing so could be losing all your goodies.
As previously stated, and i hope to god/allah/buddha/ronald mcdonald that no one in charge is looking at this, but i have lost count of the people I have thanked for their honesty and moved them along , if ya see what I mean, however i have never let anyone off if I have found something which is undeclared, honesty is always the best policy.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

This will be my first visit so I probably will do both:D! It is mainly clothes I would be looking for. I find as an ample figured lady that there is a larger choice (:rotfl:) of clothing for me on the other side of the pond. I can get larger sizes here but the price is high and every other woman of large size has the same clothes as me! I like to be different I do:o:p:DWhen life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0 -

no.. not at all.. I'm going for the following
1 - to walk over the brooklyn bridge
2 - to walk around central park
3 - to sample in excess of 50 different types of beer
4 - to sleep off a huge hangover
5 - to take an internal flight and see washington dc
so unless you class item 3 as shopping, i'm not planning on any really

First visit? Even more reason to see as much of NY as you possibly can. Don't spend too much time inside a shop....please.....I beg of you.A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition~ William Arthur Ward ~0
