remember, you only have £340 for all your customs allowance, (which is better than it used to be) so you really can't buy a whole wardrobe worth of clothes, or you'll be liable for customs duty and taxes...
Im not exactly up on this but couldnt you just remove all the tags, crease the clothes a little and make them look like you took them with you :o . would this not work if you were buying for yourself.

    Did someone mention my name?

First off some posters are right the potential of getting stopped by one of the ever so good looking customs officers is minimal, these are of course the same odds that a drug smuggler runs as on a flight of 200 to 300 people and with a team of 8 how many people do you think can be stopped?

The reality is you could be stopped, much the same as speeding/using your mobile whilst driving etc, and then you have no defence and more importantly you will now have a record with us, which trust me can hinder you in more ways than you could imagine.

I have been involved with many situations where someone is taking the mickey and I have seized everything, and i mean their old clothes and bags too, because the offending items are packed with their illicit booty. I have also dragged someone into a search room for a more personal examination as if they are lying to me about importation of dutyable goods what else are they lying about?

Be under no illusion that vat and duty evasion is high priority, because its not, no officer would rather be dealing with some chancer than harrasing a drug/cig smuggler or !!!!!! etc, however if we find something in someones bag we have to deal with it, so in this instance we are lumbered with you for an hour whilst we play silly sods with ripped off labels and crumpled clothes etc, whilst some more "juicy" people walk right past.

Its not just a matter or morality its the law, anything with a total of over £340 must be declared when arriving from a non eu state.

I know this wont change peoples outlook and their willingness to do what they want and thumb their noses to the law but what the heck i've said my piece.

I have to say I agree with Phat on this one - why take the risk people?? Its just not worth the hassle surely??
  • What I want to know is if you rip the labels off clothes etc how can it be proven that you have bought the items from abroad?

I have brought back hundreds of piunds worth of clothes in the past. I take all labels off (apart from gifts that I leave on). And I wear clothes to come back in that I have bought over there. I just don't see how it can be proven that the clothes were bought not in the UK.

I am going to America at the end of April for 3 and a half weeks visiting a few different cities - NYC being our last stop for 10 nights. We plan to take a holdall inside our case going, so we can come back with 2 cases, plus a small case for handluggage each.

So you want to know how to break the law, this is'nt the kind of forum which encourages such things therefore you may be better served finding a less moral/legal forum to post your questions. And even if it was one those types of forums im hardly gonna tell you am I.

By the by, I, and colleagues of mine, often detain peoples goods subject to them proving they were bought in the uk, you see its not for us to prove that you bought your goodies outside the e.u its for you to prove they were'nt.

Hi Phatbear, can i ask a question? How much do goods have to be worth in stores before you pay tax on them? Im going to NYC in 2 weeks (1st time) and someone said you pay tax on clothes in stores etc etc?

    Thanks
