If we can get in the region of £275 for direct flights that would be worth waiting for. Is £250 to £300 for directs?

I'd echo comments about LHR, a real pain in the a*** airport. It really all comes down to proximity to your home though, having said that, I'm not too far from Liverpool airport and would rather fly from BHX!

Leeds is nearest to me, and i could fly to AMS then to NYC, for a few quid more, but i prefer Manchester, so i know exactly what you mean..

I paid £288 for my direct flight this time, so if you can get that price, book it..

also, make sure you double check the airlines websites, as they can sometimes be £10 or so cheaper, not much, but it adds up..

I am also concerned about the amount of walking involved since everyone says they walked loads while they were there.
We walked loads, but that was our choice. In a way it was easier to walk than either hang about for a bus or navigate the subway. Plus you can always work out how far it is: I think in markymoo's travel guide he explains how long it takes to walk one block. The grid system means you can easily work out how many blocks it is, and you know what size they are, so you know it's a 10 minute walk, or a 30 minute walk. And you can easily break things up: stop for a drink or a photo shoot. And I'm not saying it's entirely flat, but I don't really remember many hills. Not like most British cities! So it's level walking.

Get into training now, and consider getting one of those sticks with a seat if it's really going to be a problem! Forget your vanity and pack the comfy shoes.

Excellent, thanks for all your replies everyone, I feel alot better. I have found non direct flights for £250, I dont mind a stop in Paris though.

Now I need to look into some cheap hotels/hostels. As I am going by myself does anyone know of an hotels that do a good rate for a single room? I had a look through the link in the first page of this thread but the all seems quite expensive...$100 a night is far to much!!...but I suppose it is New ork so the prices aren't going to be cheap are they?

I quite like travelling alone and enjoy being able to go out at night for a meal or to a bar for some drinks, was worried that I might have to spend my nights hidden in my hotel room!!

Thanks again for your advice and I will defo take the comfy shoes!!!

    Hey Roxy,

I havent stayed there but a few people have recommended the Chelsea Star - its a lot cleaner than some of the true budget accoms in NY!! I have no idea if the dorms are shared though - that would put me off for sure...perhaps you should email and ask them??

    Anyway link is:

But you can also search trip advisor - be careful though at this end of the market some places can be awful!!!
  • I can agree with the comfy shoes. Im 27 going on 77 and I live in my trainers and flats. If you are going somewhere where you want to dress up a bit pack a pair of flat shoes for the walk/subway home. I do this whenever I go out:rolleyes:

In terms of really small things and safety, if you have a shoulder bag like mine with a two zips, always zip it so the zip is closer to you preventing anyone from just opening your bag up behind you. Look confident, have some common sense and just keep eyes and ears open.

I always put my bag across my body rather than just on one shoulder if I'm unsure of my surroundings, and on holiday keep my passport etc in a small bag which I can wear a coat or cardigan over the top of, so it's less visible. This doesn't work in NY in August, however! :rotfl:

Hello, I was just wondering if you guys who have been to New York a few times could tell me if it would be safe for a 23 year old girl to go to New York alone? I don't have a massive budget so ideally was planning on staying in a hostel...do you think this would be safe? Many thanks for any help you can add in advance!

My daughter is planning to work and live in NY for a couple of years once she has completed her degree (the company she works part-time for have training courses for graduates and opportunities to work at their place in New York). I have to say, despite the distance, I will be more relaxed about her being in NY than I would if she were going to London. I have never felt safer in a city that I did in NY. It goes without saying that nowhere is completely safe and you have to be sensible about things but I would say go for it and enjoy yourself.

Erm... $100 a night for a room in a hotel with a private bath is quite cheap.

try looking at https://www.hotelconxions.com they do have some of the hostels on there (read hostels, not hotels), which can be a private room, or a dorm, and share the bathroom with loads of other people..

On a side note, it amazes me that people have booked a flight, and THEN have the nerve to say - omg, hotel rooms are so expensive. Everything is on these threads to help you research, but it always seems to be people are obsessed in getting the flight as cheap as possible, and forget about what is actaully more important, the hotel room..
