Hey everyone, been reading the thread and looking for some advice. Looking to go to NYC in Jan, found flights and 3 nights in a hotel near Times Square through Virgin for £568 each including flights, is this a good deal? Tried searching for flights alone and they are coming up at anywhere from £700-£1000.

    TIA

All depends on when you are travelling to be honest. What days do you hope to go and are you fixed on your hotel choice?
What are you looking for from your hotel?

£568 includes flights, flight are normally around £300, so you're paying £268 (£90 a night) for 3 nights in a hotel "near times square"... but... what you don't say is how many people, because if you're searching for 2 people, and it's coming up at £568 each, that's £600 for flights, and £536 (£178 per night) for 3 nights in a hotel, which then isn't that great of a deal...

I have never seen flights as high as £700 - £1000 unless you're not including a saturday night stay, so that's kinda odd for a start..

Post your dates, and your budget, and lets see what we can find and without knowing what "hotel near times square" it is, we can't really tell you if it is a good deal, because it could be a really really bad hotel....

  • My daughter is going to New York & wants to stay at the Salisbury. Do you mind telling me which airport you are flying to as I'm a bit confused on which one is the best to fly to Newark or JFK?

lillymay, doesn't really matter, they are both about the same distance away from Manhattan, and taxi's, car services, and public transportation are all good from the airports..

click on the first page of this thread, and read the Getting Into And Around Manhattan guide I wrote..

Yeah that's me! Flying on the 30th as well, who are you flying with? I'm staying at the Salisbury and can't bloody wait. Training was going well then I got a dreaded cold which I'm struggling to shift.

What are your plans for the night before, think we're going to find and Italian then watch the fireworks in Central Park, then an early night:o

We are flying with Continental from Manchester.
We might do the official 'pasta party' the night before, which is $15 each or maybe we will try an Italian as suggested as we are staying in Brooklyn.

Oh the fireworks...forgot about them...must get some propper plans started!

hi mark, thanks for your response. There are indeed two of us going so £568 each doesn't look like that good a deal. The hotel is called Renaissance New York Times Sqauare.

I think I probably were searching for the flights incorrectly, I've always been a package holiday girl, this is the first time I've looked at doing flights and accomodation seperate! We are looking to go either 11th or 18th Jan 2010 for 3 nights.

We're not bothered about being in a plush hotel as we don't intend on spending a lot of time there and being out exploring.

Queen_B - that is the issue, you're flying on a Monday for 3 nights, so you do get expensive flights, so the hotel is probably cheap, and the flights are expensive on that deal.

Personally, I'd look at going on the 15th Jan for 3 nights, then your flight is about £400 with BA.

as for a hotel, there are choices that are around $160 - $200 on quikbook.com, which when you factor in taxes, and convert to UK money is about £400 for 3 nights for both of you.

So maybe that deal you saw is good, because it doesn't include a saturday night stay, which is the key to getting a cheap flight to NYC.

Without having looked much I have found booking the flight and hotel through ba.com
£831 for both of you flying from Heathrow on 11th January staying at the Hampton Inn New York.

Mum stopped at this hotel last year and while she said it wasn't plush it was clean and central. I will keep looking, but that is already taking a chunk. For some reason BA seem to have some quite cheap deals for hotel + flights at the moment. Might be worth you looking at the different options. xx
