Thank you very much. I'll have a look at them.
The prices do seem high when we're staying at places like this for $79.99!

I think my reluctance to go to NY is clouding the issue. Given my own way, I'd stay in New England for the last couple of days!0 -
I'm not a convert like markymoo
 You're not planning to have a hire car in NYC are you? Ditch it! Before you arrive. Unless your OH is used to driving in NYC ...
Parking, traffic, traffic, parking ... hard to tell which will give you more grief. And the public transport is SO good, and runs 24/7, you really won't need it and it will be more hassle than it is worth.
I'm not a convert... i'd been visiting NYC years before I came to this site... oh, hang on.. i am... no... i'm just a regular tourist..> it works for me as a holiday, read my blog post for the reasonings behind it - https://www.m4rkm.com
and as for the sleeping in the car, I do hope you're not being serious, Parking in NYC is expensive, and you could be looking at $40 a day easily, do what Sue's just said and ditch the car at the rental place and travel back into NYC via train. You can even get the subway to JFK to get to the airport, so if you've booked a rental to drop off there, it might be worth dropping it off first.... seriously, you DO NOT need a car...

I've been to Maine, and it's a different world to NYC. What you've gotta bear in mind is that Maine is classed as vacation land, where Americans go on vacation during the summer months. You try get that place for that price in the height of summer. NYC is a year round destination, so prices are notoriously always high...
I know where you're coming from, and from what I can tell you'll probably hate New York, I'm not a shopper, but a bar hopper, and a wanderer, if you like that, you will get something out of it... there is a buzz about it, there is just something totally unique that I can't find anywhere else that i've been.
I've given you a hotel choice at $120 a night, and that's not too shabby for NYC, but you won't really know until you've done NYC as to whether you like it or not...

Thanks! I adore goats cheese!
The Zoo would be a no-no for me but the Park sounds good.
The Cosmo is not available for our dates, unfortunate because it looks ideal.
I still think $300 is a lot to pay for a room for two nights but if that's the going rate.....
We also need a hotel with car parking space as we have to drop the SUV/MPV/vehicle whatever off at JFK before we catch the plane home.0 -

Oh I can bar hop with the best of them! THAT part I'm looking forward to!
I just think after two weeks wandering around Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire (with a trip to Niagra) I'll find NY a bit of a shock!0 -

the cosmo IS available for your dates, i checked on https://www.hotelconxions.com and https://www.quikbook.com, and with tax is it $449 for 2 nights, or £300 in english money... (damn that awful exchange rate)
Oh.. btw.. there is only 1 hotel in the whole of manhattan that has a car park... most hotels have a deal with a parking garage, but it is still expensive... change the date, go to the airport, and then hop on the airtrain then subway back to manhattan... DO NOT DRIVE INTO MANHATTAN.. if I made it bright red and huge would that help..

Thought markymoo had found it for you on your dates via hotelconxions? That's how we booked it, no problems, when we wanted to stay an extra night the Cosmo even did it at the same (cheaper!) rate!
Oops, Didn't see that bit! Went straight to the hotel website. Thanks
Nooooooo! Do what markymoo says, if you can't change your drop-off point, change your drop-off day, get rid of it before you hit NY!
think it may be too late, booked the car for 14 days
:rotfl: But at least you'll be used to Americans by then - imagine doing it the other way round!
we almost did! OH wanted to start and finish holiday in NY but I put my foot down.0 -
if you've booked and prepaid the car, you may be able to drop it off early anyway.. it will be cheaper to drive to JFK, and have 2 people get the airtrain ($5) and the suwbay ($2.25) back to the hotel, or even a taxi ($55 including tip, but no toll), as parking in NYC is extortionate... you're looking $20 for an hour at some places, and $60 for a day rate plus tax!
EDIT - i just did a quote on ICON parking systems, as a generic quote, for a total of 73 hours (12 noon friday, to 12 noon monday), it comes up with a total cost of $168 (woah!)..
see now why you must DITCH THE CAR..

I'm guessing that we shouldn't take the car into NY? :rotfl:
Thanks for the link, I went to the hotel web site
I've also just read reviews (pretty awful) for Delta which is the carrier we're using0
