  • If you have a premier life account with barclays you get fee worldwide access to airport vip lounges. It cost £25 per month and you get free travel ins too. What i usually do is upgrade my account to get the benefits then downgrade it when i get back. They take the £25 at the first of every month,so if you upgrade after the 1st say for example on the 2nd then cancel it whe you get back (on the 10th for example) then you dont pay a penny!

The travel ins covers the account holder and whoever they travel with. The airport vip lounge is free for the account holder (if its a joint account then its free for both parties) otherwise you pay £15 for every other person.

    Hope that helps x
  • hi

i hope no one minds me posting here - i have had a brief juke through some of the pages but i was just wondering if any1 knew if there is a general time for cheaper flights to ny? i am thinking about booking a trip for a few days in the next 12/18months so have plenty of time to save etc

it woud be for 2 ppl flying from belfast - i haven't even checked if a direct flight is possible!as i am sure you have gathered this is just a very recent decision!!

    thanks in advance x

I was in the same boat last year... Decided to go but didnt have a clue when!
First thing to remember is that you cant book anything just yet really - Its too far ahead. What you CAN do though is start looking into things now so you can know what is a good deal when you see one.
I looked at flights in as many months as possible... IE first saturday of the month to second saturday of the month, for January, February, March, etc. This way I got an idea of the 'cheapest' month... For me it was August. Then I did the same but for weeks (first saturday-second saturday, second saturday-third saturday, etc)... Turned out to be the third week of August. So that was how we decided what time of year we were going!
Then I started researching hotels and the like.
I dont know if August will be cheapest time to fly for everyone, but it certainly was for me.

    Mark,

Just read your report and really enjoyed it, I too will be heading to J & R and hope i'll be as good as you.

Now all those beers you drink, any good local ones I should be trying when i'm there soon, I have enjoyed Sam Adams, Fat Tire and Red Hook in the past (There was also Pete's wicked many years ago!!). Would appreciate recommendations from an expert:beer:

i knew i should have written down each beer i drank.. dammit..

it was craft beer week when I was in NYC, so this probably helped with a huge range of beers at many different bars... i'll browse through the webpage and see what I drank

quick recommendations are anything by brooklyn brewery, or sixpoint

    Hiya All,

Been reading this (and the last thread) for almost 2 weeks now! I'm looking to go to NYC for 5 days with my girlfriend next Feb (3rd - 8th).

Found a trip with Expedia for £1150 (flights & hotel) which looks good to me, my friend in work who's been (and loves the place!) reccommended the Roosevelt Hotel New York to me, and it seems good for the price to me, has anyone else got any opinions of this hotel here?

    Cheers

    Alidai
We went to the Roosevelt in 2005. The public rooms were quite grand, but the bedrooms were very tired and in need of a drastic makeover. Apparently some rooms suffer from noise intrusion so ask for a quite room. The location is excellent. I’m going in June to the Hampton Inn® hotel in Manhattan-Times Square North at 851 Eighth Avenue Times Square, which you can get for $211 advance payment which includes a full hot breakfast (extra at the Roosevelt)

markymoo - good read that - not surprised you go to NY so much if you live in Wakefield ;) is Rooftop Gardens still open?!

Can i ask you a question about your iphone - does the GPRS work for maps in NYC?

I'm taking mine over in a few weeks and was rather relying on it to get me around.

    Cheers

No, Rooftops shut years ago.... though I don't go out in Wakefield, because Leeds is more my style..

anyway.. I have 2 iPhones, one that is hacked unlocked, which I use in the USA with an AT&T simcard, and then a secondary hack to make the internet work on PAYG with AT&T (complex, yes, but i'm an IT Geek!)

If you were to use your own iPhone, and it isn't hacked, or you're using it on a UK network, you'll get clobbered for data charges, which are £6 per mb...

In a week I went through 88.4mb of data, which with the AT&T sim cost $20, but if you were to use o2, it would cost a whopping £530.40

Finally, if your iphone is on contract, and locked, I wouldn't unlock it. Trust me, get a map, and you'll be fine when wandering around the streets of Manhattan.

I'm on O2 contract - was only planning on using it now and again if I get stuck with a map - so not that bothered about using a couple of megs of data.

Had some great nights out in West Yorkshire over the years - and Leeds is definitely the best. (combination of being a St Helens fan and having gone to poly with lots of yorkies!)

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting the link to your trip report, its a great read. I posted on here a while ago looking for advice on Brooklyn as we want to do a split week next year. We booked our flights this week and go 8th-16th April.

Can I ask which hotel you stayed at in Brooklyn and did you book it via hotelconnexions or somewhere else?

Thanks also for introducing me to The Accomplice and the High Line, 2 things NYC I had never heard of until now.. we will definitely be checking these out when we go! :D
