Its swings and roundabouts, try paying a cabbie with plastic or getting a coffee or bagel from a deli with plastic and they will look at you like you have two heads, dont get me wrong they have the means to accept it but dont like to.
Personally I would take enough money to get you by for a few days in cash, and remember when you use your card, as I found out to my cost, you say its a charge/credit card or it wont accept it.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
Cabs too and from JFK are a fixed price of $45 +toll's + tip which is $60 each way its not on the meter, if a hotel tells you its better they get you a car to take you its because they are on commision from the car companies0

Hi
I booked a "private" transfer for October, from Newark direct to hotel with company called Super Shuttle, use phone in airport to contact them and they come and collect you, $68 return for 2 of us, on credit card bill it's worked out at £41.95 not bad I don't think
The only thing super about the super shuttle is the name when it comes to New York.
For $44 (plus toll and tip, giving you a total of around $65), you could have got a private car from dial7 or carmel car service. at $68, plus toll and tip, which you will have to pay when you get there, you're really just throwing money away.
You can get from Newark to Manhattan for only $15 if you use airtrain / train...0 -
If i'm honest I only knew it was you when you were on another thread and you had a discussion with some guy called Phatbear:rotfl:
yeah.. i'm known in the real world as Mark M, which I ended up changing to m4rkm, but I joined here and had a different name... dunno why.. would like to be able to change it now.. but that means registering a new account... doesn't it?0 -
I went three weeks ago and I booked a transfer (Via Expedia, but I assume there would be other places to do this from) - And it cost us £11 each one way. We booked it the day before we left, and we just rang the number on the voucher from the phones in JFK, and they picked us up in about 20 minutes. There were some other people in the van too, but if you arent in a rush, it seems a much cheaper way of doing it than getting a cab.
We didnt end up booking it for our return, we got a cab to Newark instead. It was a lot more expensive, iirc about $70 including tip, but the driver was lovely and gave us a mini-tour around the east village and all that!
cheaper to use the subway/airtrain and probably the same time if not quicker... $7.25 = $4.40, and you have to share with other people..
c'mon people.. all these questions about how to get into manhattan or back from manhattan are answered on the getting into and around manhattan guide I wrote, and is linked on page 1 of this thread...

Well it was my first time in NY, and we landed at about 10pm, took til about 11.30pm to get our luggage and whatnot, and we were in no mood to be trying to get the subway for the first time that late at night! We were grateful to not have to think at that point, we'd been up for over 24 hours!0 -
We land at at 10.40pm, and that's if the flight isn't delayed! We're certainly not tackling the subway with suitcases in tow at the early hours of the morning.
Taxi it is!
We'll leave the subway until the first day. I might even try to sort a Big Apple Greeter ... anyone met one before?0
