The Knicks aren't the big ticket they used to be, they are not such a great team so i've heard on trip advisor (Marky may have mentioned it as well).we're hoping to catch a game while we're there.

I believe the Knicks are a bit of a joke in the US. Everyone I speak too seems to think they're one of the worse teams in the NBA. Anyhoo, I've got tickets for the Pacers game on Nov 4th, got tickets for $20 each (Usually $75) through a deal I found on TripAdvisor. I'll try and find it. Looking forward to it, I love US sport and all the entertainment that goes with it!

  • treeny_bash - $50 might get you a private double room at a hostel, but certainly not any hotel in NY...having said that, availability is likely to be patchy for such a popular time of year in the city

  • hey guys, this thread is great! Im going to NY in march for 4 nights, cany wait!!! Staying in times square at the hilton (i know, i know! times sq! lol). Just wondering whats the best way of gettin to the hotel from Jfk (theres 4 of us) Also i understand that a cab is $45 but is it the same price on the way back? (from manhat to jfk).

I was planning to take cash and my bank card for emergency (no credit cards as i might go crazy). Is this the best way, im just a little cautious of having so much cash with me!

Also, if anyone has any advice on where to find some great bargains that would be great! Iv heard about century 21 and woodbury common too but is it really that great?

    TIA x

The cab both too and from JFK is $45 + tolls + tip so $60 each way, as far as "the best way" thats individual preference, it also depends how many are in your party and what time of day you arrive.

On the last trip in aug there were 4 of us so a cab was reasonable however on previous trips i have used the subway and the airtrain to get to my hotel, you can plan your route here:

    www.hopstop.com

however if this is your 1st trip and your a tad nervous of jumping straight on the the subway then at least a cab will drop you at your door, also you get your first view of manhattan from a cab which is always nice, however never assume that your cabbie knows where anything is so make sure you have your cross street and keep your eyes open.

Re bargain hunting, manhattan is a shoppers dream, well it use to be when the dollar was 2 to 1 ha ha. Century 21 is hit and miss on our last trip I bought nothing in there but mrs phatbear bought 2 pairs of uggs for less than $100 each, and on the occasion before that she went mad in the handbag section. Its worth a look anyway as you never know what you will find. I have never been to woodbury common however the reports ive had havent been glowing, for starters its expensive to get there and then when you are there it almost takes a whole day out of your trip.

Personally I would mooch around manhattan for bargains, found some great ones in tj maxx this time around, eg ralph lauren polo shirts for about $30 each, and macy always have some kinda sale on, dont forget your out of towners 10% discount card in macys too.

iPod Touch 32gb is $299 plus tax is about $326, at todays exchange rate that is £197... the same thing in the UK is £229... so a saving of over £30.... what do you want? to save hundreds on an item that doesn't cost that much.... The exchange rate isn't as good as it used to be, and apple have made the dollar / pound differences a bit better than it used to be, thus making the saving smaller.

Also, you are only allowed £340 worth of goods back in the UK when you come back, so it might not be really worth it..

    M
I thought it was only £145 worth of stuff?

I'll take a look at Zune prices, but £30 saving is better than nothing, plus i get to buy it in the Manhattan Apple shop. The exchange rate might change a bit before november, so i might be able to squeeze a few more dollars out of my money.

Thanks for the link, just booked 2 $20 tickets for Knicks vs Utah on the 9th Nov.

We're just going for the atmosphere really and to enjoy the game. Hopefully if (when ;)) we return we can catch the baseball season.

I've heard a better way back to the airport is to get your hotel to book a car and pay a fixed fee. In a taxi you pay on the meter and i've heard it's possible to be stuck in traffic for ages, racking up a big bill.

Century 21 certainly looks like it. We'll take a look. I'll go to Woodbury Common if the wife wants to, but i'm not bothered wasting a day travelling out there to save a few dollars on clothes i can buy in the city.
  • Century 21 is not supposed to be as great as its made out to be, i asked on Trip Advisor and they were saying that it's like a jumble sale.
Good for perfumes though, but clothes wise it's a nightmare.
Am still going to take a look though when i am there.
Am i right in thinking it is near Ground Zero?

    Nope and nope.

New allowances are £340 per person.

Cabs too and from JFK are a fixed price of $45 +toll's + tip which is $60 each way its not on the meter, if a hotel tells you its better they get you a car to take you its because they are on commision from the car companies

I went three weeks ago and I booked a transfer (Via Expedia, but I assume there would be other places to do this from) - And it cost us £11 each one way. We booked it the day before we left, and we just rang the number on the voucher from the phones in JFK, and they picked us up in about 20 minutes. There were some other people in the van too, but if you arent in a rush, it seems a much cheaper way of doing it than getting a cab.
We didnt end up booking it for our return, we got a cab to Newark instead. It was a lot more expensive, iirc about $70 including tip, but the driver was lovely and gave us a mini-tour around the east village and all that!

    Hi

I booked a "private" transfer for October, from Newark direct to hotel with company called Super Shuttle, use phone in airport to contact them and they come and collect you, $68 return for 2 of us, on credit card bill it's worked out at £41.95 not bad I don't think
