  • Dear all,

I would be very grateful if you could pass some wisdom onto me. I have booked to stay at the Pod Hotel in September for 4 nights but am looking for something a bit special for my last night in New York which will be my birthday. However, my companion and I are both students so do not have a massive budget. Would any one possibly be able to recommend anything or even know of any deals if it is your birthday?

    Thanks in advance!

By something special do you mean 5* hotel or something special to do? If hotel then it'll be impossible to find a top hotel on a student budget considering how expensive rooms are in general, even hostels are charging $150 at short notice!

However you are better off spending that money on going to see a broadway show, followed by dinner somewhere posh then maybe onto a champaign bar like flute?
  • Hi there

I was looking for any advice on the customs permitted limit.

I'm going on holiday July next year, (need to forward plan as 45 of us going), one day we stop off in New York. I've got some serious shopping to do :D

I was reading on some of the boards about customs permitted limit, i've never heard of this before. I had been to New York previously when i was 15 (2006) and i'm sure i had over the limit in my suitcase. Now i've totted up my projected expenditure and it seems to be over the projected spend that i have read about.
I'm really not sure what to do as none of the items are for commercial use and i really don't want to break the law. I could spend less but even then i think it will be over the limit.

    Thanks
    JS
I am only me, no pretences, no second guesses.. It's the best I can do, I'm sorry if that's not good enough for you... I'm sorry I'm not good enough for you :A

the limit is something stupid like £100, but ud be pretty unlucky to get caught in the first place.

do what everyone does, take off the labels/boxes/receipts and pretend like you bought these with you.

    Never been before.
Looking for ideas to get a taste of the place. Realise I can't see it all in 1 day - and I do envisage I will be coming back another time.

What do you think would be a good use of my time. Maybe a Tour bus? which one is decent.

    Thanks

I did this tour in April and thought it was fantastic.

booked online before I went ($60.00). Wouldnt hesitate to recommend this company.

The limit for bringing in "other goods" (doesn't include alcohol, tobacco or perfumes) is £340 per person.

I'm suprised you've never heard of these limits, as there are HUGE signs in the airports upon arrival.
You can spend less and be under the limit, you just have to spend less than £340.

Taken from the HM Revenue & Customs website
200 cigarettes; or 100 cigarillos; or 50 cigars; or 250g of tobacco
4 litres of still table wine
    16 litres of beer
1 litre of spirits or strong liqueurs over 22 per cent volume; or 2 litres of fortified wine (such as port or sherry), sparkling wine or other alcoholic beverages of less than 22 per cent volume and
£340 worth of all other goods including perfume and souvenirs.

And the alcohol limits won't apply to you, as you have to be 21 to purchase alcohol in the USA

Back in 2006, it would have been £143, but this was changed in 2008.

I sometimes wish I had PhatBear's job, and able to shock people when they think, just because they....
take off the labels/boxes/receipts and pretend like you bought these with you.
means that they can get away with breaking the law!

maybe they don't give a crap though...

Its not all fun in my job, i've currently got a nasty rash from some new latex gloves we have been using.

Gotta love some peeps who assume whipping the tags off things makes them un-recognisable to your average customs officer, there are soooo many tale tell signs its laughable.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
  • Is that £340 collectively, over the whole contents of what was purchased? Lol sorry for being a bit stupid i'm just so confused by everything i've read :)

    Thanks

say you buy a pair of jeans worth £300, and then a top at £40. that's it.. boom done...

you CANNOT pool allowances, everyone has their own £340, so just because there are 45 of you, doesn't mean you can spend £15,300 if everyone else spends £0.

you can spend £340, and that is your limit. everything over, must be declared and duty and vat are payable

    Hi
    not dumb question :D
£340 per person tobacco and alcohol separate although you wouldn't be able to put it in her suitcase i don't think. I'm going to worry about this now as i won't have the money to pay any charges for exceeding the limit.
