Hi..Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb but ive been browsing over this thread , especially the last few comments . and wondered about the £340 limit .?
I am planning to go NY early in January so im trying to get a grip of all the ifo I need now..I am going with my 3 yr old daughter so does this mean we can have £340 each ??? And would that exclude alcohol and tobacco on her allowance?
Alas your 3 year old has no allowance for alcohol or tobacco, you need to be 17 to import either one of those items.
And yup you have £340 each and has been previously mentioned you cant pool the money.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
I have booked the staybridge suites for next year ( new York ) They don
t open until January 2010. I booked beginning of July of this year after referals off here. The payment has not been taken off my Visa card yet .Is this normal ?
The thing is i had a call from my credit card company telling me my card may have been used fraudulantly whilst i was shopping elsewhere on line , so they cancelled and re issued me with new cards....Different numbers etc ( partner and i )
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE PAYMENT. AS I USED THE OLD CARDS TO MAKE THE PAYMENT ONLINE ( weeks ago ) WILL THEY REQUEST FROM MY CC COMPANY AND THE CC COMPANY WILL TELL THEM IV GOT A NEW CC NUMBER AND PROCESS IT ?
will ring and check but just want to check on here first as i trust the info on here. also i got a great rate on the friends and family which was non cancellable so dont want to book again and may be end up with 2 non cancellabe bookings and payments.........
THANKS0 -
I only recommend the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and never have any problems with my CC.
Most hotels you book in NYC will be guaranteed by your credit card, but you'll end up paying upon checkout. So you get the rate you want, but what you end up paying is in the hands of the Exchange Rate gods...
You have your booking, and unless the hotel contact you, you're alright. All you need to do is call the hotel a week before to double check.
Also, This line here makes me laughTHE CC COMPANY WILL TELL THEM IV GOT A NEW CC NUMBER AND PROCESS IT ?
Think about what you've said.
Now you've done that, what would be the point in issuing you new cards, if the CC company would TELL anyone who tries putting through a transaction on your OLD card, that you've got a new one, pass on YOUR details to them, even though, THEY stopped your old cards due to FRAUDULENT activities. (answer, no, they'd decline the transaction, and the hotel would normally contact you!)

Its not all fun in my job, i've currently got a nasty rash from some new latex gloves we have been using.
Gotta love some peeps who assume whipping the tags off things makes them un-recognisable to your average customs officer, there are soooo many tale tell signs its laughable.
But how can it be proved...it cant, unless you invest thousands on pounds in investigations and even then its not worth the hassle!
Iv been doing this all my life especially when shopping for jewelley from places like UAE and all my friends do it as well, one even for their business.0 -
I'm sorry but I really dont agree with 'taking the tags off' if you want to buy over £340 worth of stuff then pay the ruddy duty on it!!!
£340 is more than the amount of spending money on my whole last NY holiday - if you've got that kind of cash to flash more than that around on jeans, bags or whatever then you should pay the tax on it!0 -

In a first instance, you need to apply for an ESTA - https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html
once you've done that, and you are authorised for travel, then you fill in the same questions on a green form on the Plane.

If you are NOT authorised for an ESTA, then you will need to apply for a Visa.

Amy - you can book before but you'll need to provide the number 72 hours before you fly, it takes 5 mins online and you get approved instantly and it emails you a number, ESTA is part of the wavier programme - if you pass it just means you are eligible for a VISA wavier.0

You can book your flights before, but as it only took me 30 seconds to do an ESTA, get it sorted now.... you'll need your passport number as a minimum, the information on your flights, and accommodation can be added in at a later date.. DO NOT LOSE THE ESTA AUTH NUMBER.... print it out, twice, write it down, twice.. .;)0
