Thanks Meadows, have checked the Beacon out, looks nice there, so thats one for my list. I love NY i cant wait to go again.
I live in Exeter so my nearest airport is Bristol which i know fly to NY on continental i think.
WaxiesDargle mentioned The Beacon Hotel the other day. it does look good.
Continental @ Bristol. Yes they do, that's where we fly from. Really not far from us at all.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
I don't think Bristol fly direct to JFK though...or do they?0

Continental from Bristol to Newark NJ, which I think is a far better airport I think.
If the weather is okay (winds etc), they come into Newark right down the Hudson river, so any newbies to New York try to get a seat on the left of the plane and you get a fantastic view of the skyline and the Statue of Liberty (our daughter and her partner got this view a few years ago, what a great start to their holiday).
If you end up on one of the other runways you come in over Jersey and Manhattan is way off in the distance.
From Newark you can get a helicopter to Manhattan if you want to arrive in style, a taxi (about $80, expensive unless there are four of you) or the bus that has three stops on Manhattan, which is great value.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -

Maybe it is only open during the week in September as it will be term time??? I am however only guessing and really hope it will be open at the end of August when I go.

I would check the news for info on Coney Island - there are plans to shut the whole place down. It was given a temporary reprieve, but there was a meeting about its future last week...
It was open 2 weeks ago as we were on the big wheel!0 -
We're just back from 2 weeks in NY - travelled up to Niagara & did some other bits as well as the city. Thought I'd mention some things that folks with children might like - our son is 5 and had a fantastic time.
We stayed in Brooklyn, hotel right next to L subway train, so 20 minutes into central Manhattan. There's loads to do for kids - Prospect Park has a great childrens' zoo and also botanic gardens; the Brooklyn Childrens' Museum is fantastic; and Coney Island was really interesting in a weird way (grottiest beach I've ever seen, but kids love it!) There were a few tears as there's a height restriction of 4 feet something on the rollercoaster, but we did the big wheel (with carriages that roll around!) and loads of other rides for kids.
Using the Subway was pretty easy - though there was a distinct lack of maps around. I picked one up at the station nearest JFK - they may have them in the ticket booths if you ask, but they weren't obvious. You can take up to 3 children up to 44 inches tall for free on the Subway - our son's taller than that, but we were told not to bother paying by the official type person. He was also very impressed that people kept standing up to offer him a seat!
Kid-friendly things to do in Manhattan include Ripley's Believe It or Not, Staten Island Ferry, Top of the Rock, Shark speedboat, open topped bus tour...
One last handy hint - if you're hiring a car, make sure you don't have a dozy other half who doesn't bother asking for a map of Brooklyn. Navigating your way out of NYC using a Subway map is interesting to say the least! :eek:0
