as a first time visitor i didn't get one, and don't regret it.. on a short weekend trip, which my first trip was, i think, out of "tourist" attractions i went to MoMa, and the Empire State, and the rest was walking around taking photos of New York..

depends what you want out of a city break. If you go to go to museums, and generic tourist attractions, then yes, it might be worth it. If you go to see a city, then it's probably not worth it IMO..

Oooo I'm off on Monday :D

Cant wait to go - shame the weather looks a bit showery but never mind...am planning on visiting the Cherry Blossom Festival at the botanical gardens so hope it brightens up one day of 7! Will have to get dollars when there though sadly as am not going to have time before I go (with marathon prep and all) :D

    Oooo thanks Zaren :D:D

Looking forward to the festival - I missed it when I was in Japan a few years ago but the NY one is supposed to be good (although obviously if it rains not so good ;))

Mark - my daughter's off to NY in June (flights for £250 ish with AA!) and wants to stay 'a bit downtown'. (She and I stayed in the New Yorker about 18 months ago but she's decided it is out of her price range!) The loft in the Cosmopolitan and a 1 bed (sleeps 2) are showing on hotel connexions at 625$ - is that a regular price (I notice you stay there whenever the price is right;)) Other than that they can look on hotwire & priceline - but not know what they're getting? Any advice appreciated.
