Agree about Upper West Side and Central Park, fab.

I have stayed in Times Square and Greenwich Village and much preferred The Village. Really felt like I was living with the locals. And you can still visit everything easily. :D

Well I have found the New Yorker for £756 each including flights. It is about a 10min walk from Times Square and is near Penn station. Reviews dont look too bad on tripadvisor but I am still going to look around. Saying that I have found the Waldorf Astoria for £956 each - all I know is the name from the movies! :D

Penn Station is busy too, maybe slightly less busy than TS, but still busy and noisy

    Have you booked this yet?

We stayed here a couple of years ago and wouldn't return, though in fairness I think they will have finished a large refurbishment programme that was in full flow when we stayed there.

It was always chaos in the lobby, the staff were not very friendly and we had to store our suitcases in the bath as there wasn't a spare inch of room in the bedroom (yes, I know NYC rooms are small but our room had literally a small double with a half foot around it). It didn't seem very clean though this could have just been the age of the room.

Ironically we just got back from a wonderful stay (in Times Square) in a suite that must have been four times the size of our New Yorker room. We paid the same for this as we did for the New Yorker. You couldn't hear a thing from outside when we were in our room, before anyway mentions it ;)

If you have booked then with luck your stay will be better than mine.

What was the hotel called, KarenG?

I enjoyed the Roosevelt when I was there in January. Was pleasantly surprised with the amount of space we had and staff could not be any nicer or more helpful. So quiet in the rooms too.

We are staying at The Salisbury Hotel, 123 W 57th St just opposite Carnegie Hall. Does anyone have any experience of this hotel?

Stayed at the Salisbury twice and delighted with it - yes it is a little tired but location is superb and it is spotlessly clean - have a look at tripadvisor for the reviews. Would have no hesitation going back for a third time - if you are a light sleeper though would suggest requesting a room at the rear - you can mail them in advance address on their website

    have a great time

Haven't booked yet as I was tempted by a trip to Vegas - but decided no as I took the DH there for his 30th. Going to book today once I have finished looking at all the hotels. I think that as it is going to be my birthday I dont want one which is really grim or one where I would have to share a bathroom. The room which I have found is a renovated one - well thats what is states in the description anyway.
Does the $20 trick work here in terms of the upgrade? I mean New York and not this hotel in particular.

    The New Yorker.

Griggsy, I've no idea if the $20 trick works (that's a Vegas thing right?) in NYC or not - really sorry!

Sorry Karen, I was meaning which hotel were you referring to in this part of the post:

Just trying to do a bit of housekeeping on this thread, and i know it's the general NYC thread, but it'd be nice to keep general stuff to here, and to use the Hotels thread for specific questions, especially when asking, has anyone stayed here, what is it like etc etc?

this thread is great to discuss things like sightseeing, areas of manhattan, public transport, and bargains...

    Hi
Has anyone been to Jersey Gardens? Ive just found out about this and wondering wheather to take a chance and go, Ive been Woodbury common before and was very disapointed.
I believe Jersey gardens has Abercrombie, bath & body works etc which is much more my thing however if its no cheaper than the city/ woodbury common i'll pass.

Also can someone please confirm that shops & attractions are open Thanksgiving eve? thanks
