Hi Markymoo not sure if you will be able to answer this but I will ask any way. Is there a general rule of thumb with regards to when airlines release more cheap seats? For example over the weekend continental released some cheap seats for their flights to Newark from Edinburgh (£304) but once again I took too long trying to look into the hotels that they went back up to £349. Is it generally at the weekends that airlines reduce fares or is it just a case of pot luck?
Sorry if this should be within another section of this thread.

    Griggsy... good question..

bear in mind that Continental are on US time zones, so if you're checking at 1pm UK, it's 8am at the latest in the UK..

I noticed when searching esp with US Airways, that if they have a special fare, ususally in a low class code (this is a special airline thing they do to confuse us), that when it runs out, normally, it'll get topped back up.

the best thing to do, is to check the fare rules that are attached to the fare, and also how full the flight is. If the flight looks reasonably empty, (seat maps), and the fare rule says that book by 30th may for travel til whenever, then you're probably 70% safe that the fare will keep reappeaering.

now this isn't set in stone, but can be used as a general rule of thumb. Now i remember the cheap cheap delta (error) fares, and they were there for the whole day, and the next day they disappeared. so, if it is a bargain, and stands out like a sore thumb as so bluddy cheap, book it straight away.

if they fluctuate, then you're probably alright to keep shopping around.

I'm a huge fan of what i made up as the 3 month rule, when it comes to off (non school holiday) season, and booking flights. I'm wanting to go again september, and started looking today, but not going to book anything til mid summer. airlines will realise which days are busier, and which are not, and release their lowest class code ticket. i've already flown delta, and know this to be class T, and currently these are not displayed as an option.

Another thing is.. once you've got your flight, and you know you want to go, you can still spend a few days to get your hotel, so don't think you have to book everything at the same time. I do, because I always stay at the same hotel, and only spend hours and hours getting the best price on the flight, but now i'm more loyal to an airline, to get points, and points make free flights.. woohoo

I know it's long, but all in all it does make sense, fare rules are your friend, as are the seat maps to see how full the flight is..

We have just flown with Continental from Manchester and I had been following the prices for quite some time before taking the plunge and booking. Strangely enough, or not, I booked mine on a Sunday evening when I noticed they were cheaper than I had seen before, on the Monday morning they had gone up by £80 each, but the following weekend they were back down again, but not quite as low. We booked about 12 weeks before we flew and actually booked through Expedia where they were cheaper than on the Continental website.

Sorry Karen, I was meaning which hotel were you referring to in this part of the post:

    Sorry KK! D'oh!!

It was the Doubletree Guest Suites.

Mark, I am replying here for continuity as the question's been asked on this thread but if a Mod would prefer to move it to the hotels thread, please feel free to do so.

Hello, been looking myself for around that time too, I went around the same time last year and flew Delta cos they were the cheapest, think I paid about £330 from EDI-JFK. I have found flights priced at £288 with a few options on how long to stay.. On checking again they are class T.. I just need to sort out how much money I can save for a hotel before I can decide how long I can stay for or stay with family for some of it to keep the cost down and have more beer money !
That will be 2 trips with miles earned.. how many do I need for a free trip ?

I would completely agree with you there Karen. We recently stayed there and it was amazing. Only thing I didn't like was being in the middle of TS.

erm, i think for a return trip with delta, you're probably looking at 10 trips, and you'll get one free (apart from the taxes), so it'll still cost £200, however, you'll actually be able to go at the most expensive time, when they hike the fare up, as you're not paying that element...

as for £288, that's what i paid in Class T in March to NYC with Delta from MAN... so that's really my aim to get for sept i think.. .

Just wondering if someone can clarify for me how you can tell what type of ticket it is ie the class? May need the idiots guide for this one by the way as I have been looking on the site which Markymoo gave in the flights thread and have no idea how you tell.

Ok just found the answer to that - it was staring me in the face the whole time!
