I wondered if anyone could help me... only recently started crochet,

    I'm following a hobby craft pattern for some children's mittens;

    http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/Pages/Id...a.aspx?id=1073

Ive done the first part for the cuff and got to number 4.
'For the main part of the mitt, turn work to enable you to work along row ends of cuff:
1st row – 1ch, work 1dc into each row end, (27 sts) Turn.'
But I can't figure out where to put the stitches  The pattern makes a ribbed effect for the cuff and so the row endings look differnet, and I just can't decide which part to work into!
    Any ideas?

Your help would be much appreciated, Lucy :o

You've made 27 rows - you're then asked to work across those rows (at right angles to the rows you've just worked) so that's 27 stitches in the next row ;)

Does that make sense  I can picture it in my mind, and if you were sat here I could show you :D

You've done 27 rows, so when you turn it you then do the stitches you are working into the rows rather than the stitches. You should be able to see where each row is, so just do a stitch into each one. Sorry, it's difficult to explain without actually being there to show you.

I wanted some help - i posted this in the daily so have copied and pasted it here as i think i need help . Am not sure if it makes sense?

well, i made myself go to my craft class last night. Talk about overwhelming  I didnt realise I was shy!:rotfl:I made some flapjacks and took them as you get supper, so they were very appreciative of them - although hardly anyone seemed to know what a flapjack was, and people were asking me what the green seeds are - pumpkin seeds!

I was really shy for ages and just sat there watching everyone in amazement so it was a good while before I got with it. I befriended this woman called Cara and it was her first class too (I ended up showing her how to crochet?). There was this woman called Grace and for some reason I thought she was an OSer but i didn't know how to ask?! Maybe i was wrong though. So basically everyone sits around in a circle and knits/crochets/patchworks etc. They are going to have specific card making nights, and patchworking but you don't have to do that and can just knit or crochet if you want.
It's really relaxed and everyone is very friendly . The woman who runs it was very helpful and i kept accosting her . She showed me how to knit button holes for my cushion, and she took me through some crochet. I have the makings of a square - done in trebles, but I think I am a bit baffled today by it all. She did sme of the moves very quickly and bless her was trying to spread herself around everyone, but I was like - ok, I can do that, now what's next. Need to have another go at it today. :j:o

The thing I dont get is the mathmatical part. It Started with 12 trebles, then you split those into 4 - which i understand. But sometimes you do 3 sometimes you do 6, so It's more that I find confusing - rather than how to do the stitch..... So i don't really know what i'm doing.

Would a pic help of what I have done so far? It's so confusing......

I have now made a granny square in one colour and would like to try changing colours within the square to have a two - tone effect........ but how do you do it??????? I have tried 2 different ways from googling it, but it looked awful so I must have done something wrong........
    Can anyone help please?

Also...... the pattern I have been using has two chains between each set of trebles at the sides and two between the corner sets. But I have seen others with one chain between the side trebles and two between the corners. Is there a right way? (Sorry for untechnical language!)

I do 2 chains between corners as well and 2 chains between the side trebles for the first two rounds then 1 chain between the side trebles for the subsequent rounds (3 and 4).

Crochet is very adaptable, everyone finds their own way of doing things. The thing to remember with your squares is to make sure you do the same thing for each square or you'll be in real trouble;)

    To change colour -

When you get to the end of the round simply snip off the yarn about 5cm from your hook, then pull the loop on your hook until the hook comes off the yarn. You should then have a neat knot at the corner of your square.

Take your new colour and tie it tightly to the yarn end. Try and get it as close to the stitches as possible. I do two knots, first I lay the yarn end out, then take the new yarn and lay it behind the old yarn to make a cross, I bring the new yarn across the old one and tie it close to the crochet. Then I tie the old yarn end and the new yarn end to make a double knot.

It is so much easier to show someone than describe it.

Next, put your hook through the treble space and hook the new yarn through and begin your stitch.

My squares are not perfect by any means. The bit I find tricky is joining the final corners, I'm never quite sure which stitch to slip stitich into. I think though, consistency is the thing;)

Well I've turned the work 45 degrees, and I'm ready to work along the rows, I just can't see where to actually put the hook in :o

The holes either seem to big or too small!

Can you see 27 holes though? If you can it won't really matter if they aren't all the same size because once you have done one row they will then all the same. If you see what I mean.
