I have been doing single crochet and double crochet as per uk stitches dam!!! It looks ok but I think it will take a lot of wool to get to desired result as it is tighter due to this. Another problem I am having is keeping a straight edge to one side the number of bobbles started at 89 and are now 86  I am determined to conquer this pattern as it will be lovely when finished. Am I right in saying that the number of bobbles should be half the 179 stitches that the pattern says you should have at end row 1. God I feel such a novice
Ok. Sorry to say this, but I really think you would be better off pulling it out (commonly known as frogging -'rippit' - get it?) and starting again....:( Now you have a good idea how the pattern works, it will use a lot less wool and will feel much softer and not as stiff as it will if you continue. I honestly don't know how you can do the cross overs with UK double crochet - it would make my fingers ache! Make a smaller swatch to see how the pattern works, with multiples of the bobble row - e.g. 6 x (MB, dc), plus 4 (2 dc's at each end) = 16 plus 2 for turning on first row = chain 18 to start.
Have a look at Lucy's poncho write-up here:
http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/2014/11/cowl-neck-poncho.html where she shows you what the FPTr (FPDC in US) looks like.
As for your question about numbers, I worked the pattern out as follows-
Bobble row - ch 1, dc, ((MB, dc) x 88), dc = 179. I think they have missed out a final dc at the end of the row, unless they've made the first dc into the base of the chain and done 89 repeats of the MB,dc. Personally, I would go with the equivalent of 2 dc's at each end of the row - it will lie better.
However, it will be FANTASTIC when you have finished it, so please persevere.:T:)2025 Fashion on the ration

Once again thank you so much for your advice. I have taken it apart and checked on you tube and I had been doing the correct stitches, eg treble stitch for Dc and Dc for Sc. Maths has never been my strong point but I will take your advice and do 2 Dc at each end to help it lay flat.

Hello there everybody, it's been a long time since I posted anything here but I needed a little advice. I was unsure where to post it but I have done so in the Charities section of the forum, if any of you could help me I would soooo much appreciate it!
This is the thread where I've asked my question, relating to whether or not public/product insurance is needed for donating knitted/crocheted items to charity.
Thank you again for any and all help!0 -

Good Morning Everyone!
Thought I'd pop in again to see what you've all been up to lately.
Well, I can honestly say that since I started trying to teach myself crochet, I'm addicted! I've been doing blankets and scarves (lots of scarves!) and I'd love to move on to something else now. I've seen lots of lovely bags that I'd love to try but I simply can't understand written patterns, I can only follow video tutorials! lol

I'm getting a bit bored with scarves now - lol.

Hi Mrs CD
How are you?!
Yes, I've had a look at that page, however, I'm still struggling. Just can't get my head around written instructions for some reason! lol

Hi Sally
I only learnt to crochet 18 months ago and like you find it very addictive . Try googling bobwilson123. Clare is a very good tutor...just won two awards..and her utube videos are brilliant plus there are written patterns to study once you have made your project. She does use US terms but very easy to follow.
Have fun x0 -
Hi Loopylou
Glad you're enjoying it too!
Yes I've been following her videos, she's very good.
However the bag that I want to do, she's not allowed to make a video of as its copyrighted.
