Hi ladies I wondered if I could ask a quick question I haven't crochet for years but having just discovered I'm pregnant I would love to make a blanket out of granny squares. I just wanted to know what size crochet needle I should buy, I guess I will just use a normal weight wool if there is such a thing :D thank you

4mm hook should work with double knitting wool. Hope everything works out well :)

Hi gailsmail - I think you must be my twin sister! It's like reading my own CV :rotfl:Good to see you here.

    hi all,

I'll start off with saying I cant knit, really cant and I've tried so many times.

but I do quilt, sew and cross stitch. I picked up a crochet magazine last week and I've loved some of the designs but Im scared to try because of knitting.

Is crochet as difficult as knitting? where is best to learn? do you use normal wool?

Any advice for a new starter would be fab:)
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

Personally i find crocheting alot easier than knitting (i can knit but apparantley knit cack handed!)

I learnt through my friend but i know alot of people who have learnt through youtube!

You can use whatever yarn you wish - i have even used fishing wire in the past  - you can use crochet cotton - but it is probably best to start with 'normal' wool (acrylic stuff you get in the pound shops etc.)

Only I could decide to make hot water bottle covers during a heatwave :rotfl:

Is anyone else struggling to crochet in this warm weather?

Now THAT is a lovely hot water bottle cover. Did you follow a pattern as I think it would make a fantastic Christmas present and both my daughters like owls.

Well it was a bit of an experiment! I had an owl started, so i made it a bit bigger, then picked up stiches behind and started to do granny square clusters... it took a couple of goes to get it right... to make a rectangle i worked on 14 clusters... so 4 clusters - corner- 3 clusters- corner- 4 clusters - corner - 3 clusters...
    hope that makes sense?

I made some small owls for my daughters a few weeks ago, so I might have a go at this. Thanks. :)

Saw this today-in the picture I saw the maker had used the gaps between petals for place to hook spare crotchet hook rather than for pins. Either way it is cute, straightforward and might make a little stocking filler!

Just remembered that last year I was thrilled to see the three Olympic crotcheted lions- the Lionheart project (they came to our town.) If you want some inspiration take a look at the images and the You tube clip. Crotchet in the extreme!!
They were amazing...what yarn and a hook can do.....
