It is when you wet your knitting/crochet and stretch it out, pin it and wait for it to dry. The purpose is to open up the pattern. Not all items need to be blocked but the shawl I was blocking was made from lace and it had to be blocked so you could see the pattern clearly.

My recent projects were brooches made with crocheted flowers. I can easily attach them to hair bands too which is a plus! The brooch backs were 15p from a haberdashery.

They all look lovely. If you are looking to make more brooches then go on ebay, I've just bought 50 for £3.15 so just over 6p each AND they have the safety catch on them.
If you're coming friday to Little Eaton and they arrive in time I can bring some for you to buy off me if want. Ax

Been making a 'minion' from the film 'Despicable Me' for my kids today (here) . Got the worst part done which was the body - just rows and rows of dc - drove me mad! But looking good now with felt eyes, mouth etc stuck on. Just got arms, legs and goggles left to do now.

It says to dc 7 stitches on the round for arms but having nightmare as its so tiny and fiddly, do you think would be better to just do long flat piece and then just join the 2 long edges to form a round arm?

    Thanks

I saw this film for the first time today and it was fabulous!

If the pattern is too fiddly then adapt it to suit :D

Well, my crochet kit arrived. Instructions are as clear as mud. Failed at a youtube tutorial - got as far as doing the starting knot and then 21 (well, at least whatever I counted, which may or may not have been 21!) initial stitches...then got totally baffled. Think I'd done the stitches too tightly, so unraveled it and started again. Only to forget to count. Unraveled, and started one more time and ended up with a tangled mess after the initial 21, at which point I set the ball and hook aside to calm myself down!

Has anyone got a link to a specific page or video of absolute idiot-proof instructions?

I am not crafty in the slightest, I have only made tissue paper flowers recently and was impressed at myself for that lol, maybe crochet as a next project was a little bit too ambitious!

Makes me appreciate how impressive your completed projects are!!

If it makes any difference I'm using a 4mm metal hook. Eventually I'd like to just make a simple, plain blanket to keep me warm and cheered when I'm resting!

ETA: Forgot to say, hope everyone had a lovely Christmas :)

This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A83tzk49DzI might help. It's for a foundation row without having a lot of chains. Bear in mind that it's American, so what she is calling single crochet is what we call double. But her instructions are very easy, and she shows it in close-up and also slow motion.
