The only way I know of is for smaller items and that is to use hairspray
any tips or ideas
Edit: Not sure if it makes any difference but I'm using a much smaller sized hook than recommended for the yarn so it is quite tight as it is at the moment.
Have you tried the spray starch? I'm sure somewhere in the recesses of my mind that I've heard there's a way of stiffening things like that using a sugar solution - I could be talking out of my (Mad Hatter's) hat though!
ETA - I've just found this - http://en.allexperts.com/q/Crochet-3235/thread-stiff.htm

done another few rounds on my granny blanket tonight, grr it takes me sooooo long to crochet0

I've made a pastel blanket out of granny squares, a ripple blanket out of pink, red & white wool & a green & cream lapblanket. I love Attic 24, but as I have to work with what I am given rather than going & buying wool I can't do anything as lovely as hers. I have been given some mohair oddments in lavender, grey & blue, I think I'll make a scarf with it, though not a ruffle one. I'll see what other wool I have for that.

really struggling here!!
At the moment all I am trying to do is crochet a simple (supposedly!) sqaure in rows with single stiches and I am getting sooooooooo cross with it. INo matter how loose I try to do it , the stiches get tighter, I can't see where I am supposed to put the hook in and then I struggle to get the hook through.
MIL has tried yesterday to show me what to do but she can only crochet in doubles and in squares.....
I have tried different thickeness of wool and different sized needles but I still struggle each time
Help!
My next stop is you tube....wish me luck

I can only see it getting tighter if you are tightening the yarn after each stitch.
Do a stitch but don't pull the wool tighter...you got to give it a bit of slack otherwise you will have trouble getting the hook through. when you do the next row0 -
