My OH is a bit bewildered by my crochet, when I make something he says err nice, but what is it for. Its for me of course :rotfl:

I learnt years ago when I was a teenager, we lived over a wool shop and they gave crochet lessons, to bump the numbers up the owner asked if I would go, so free lessons, made a few tank tops, very fashionable in those days :rotfl:(yep thats right 1970) Never let onto my friends about it, would have been sooooo embarassed.

Over the years made a few bits for DD & DS when they were babies, then didn't do anything for years till DD was pregnant and I made a shawl. I took it to work to do in my lunch break and regularly got an audience. Then have not done anything for the past year but am back doing things now, little animals, can't spell the correct word, japanese thing. Find them quite fiddly and often chuck across the room, break wool and start again :rotfl:

Have also got the pattern for the twirly scarf off the knit your square thread and am addicted to making them. Have also made a couple of very small snowmen.

Am now in the middle of making hat, arm warmer thingys and of course a twirly scarf in the same wool.

Just wish I had more time to do it, after xmas will be better, all the other stuff out of the way and I can crochet till my hearts content.

I find it difficult to get wool, we do have a shop here that sells wool but its never open .Notice in the window says open Fri and Sat only, went on Fri and it was shut for lunch , didn't get down town on Saturday so might try again this week. At the moment am just getting very boring double knit plain colours from Wilkos, getting a bit fed up with their colours though. Does anyone have any suggestions for buying online?

You could try Abakhan Fabrics: http://www.abakhan.co.uk/acatalog/Knitting_Yarn___Accessories.html

I'm not sure how their prices work out compared with other suppliers. Do you have a market near you? They usually have wool stalls.

the twirly scarf is the one that ladykath posted on post 72, it really is easy and when it starts twirling you think wow! I did that :D

Ollie, I don't know why I didn't think of Abakhan, we have one in Hanley about 30mins away, have used them for fabric before, but as have only just got back into crochet just didn't think of them, duh!

Have not done any crochet tonight as was wanting to finish off some xmas pressies, putting together etc, have done a cupcake mug and looks fine, was trying to finish off my mums 'xmas cake' which is a towel made to look like a cake filled with Dove stuff, I gave up, too much, not creative tonight, will finish it at the weekend :D

    Happy hooking everyone xx

Zippy, sometimes the vids just confuse  I tried them for knitting, I just can't get the hang of them, the scarf is easy, its just dc after the chain, then just trebles, oh heck, you got webcam, I can show you lol

Dazi, I wish you could come round and show me!

I don't know what to start to try to do. Be it a granny square or a twirly scarf. I only know the chainy stitch so far, and can't progress beyond that as I dont know what to make? Very tired and feeling impatient (as in i want to be making something straight away! Now, i want to be on my way to making something he he)

NOW DAMMIT. Immediately if not sooner :rotfl:

Gonna have to give up for tonight me thinks. Exhausted, and am literally sitting watching this thread for someone to reply, which really isn't fair he he. If someone wants to make an executive decision and tell me what to start with please do so. (But then you shall be my crochet mentor.:rotfl:)

So if someone can say - here make an X , and to do this you need to learn stitches 1 2 3 - then I have clear guidelines.

Going to get into bed with a hot water bottle and a pen and paper to work out money stuffs, then mindless tele. WIll check back in tomorrow !

I wish I could come round and show you too! I'm not that great but will have a go at anything, granny squares are ok, but a bit boring, you have to make a load of them to do anything with them, thats why I think the twirly scarf is a good thing, its not difficult and would give you a great sense of achievement when you have done it.

So, ok you are going to make one of these :D

You know how to do a chain, do a chain of at least 100, more if you want a longer scarf, I use 130 turn round and do a double crochet into each chain.....if you are watching an american vid they call it a single crochet, dunno why  its just hook through chain stitch, yarn over hook, pull through, yarn over hook, pull the two stiches through. The next row is a bit different, but won't go into that now, you could
do a practice with say a 20 chain. Just to get the hang of it.

Trust Jackie, you can do this, and if all else fails, we will ask help from the experts on here lol

Dazi, I'd love to make the twirly scarf! Not done any crochet since school!! What size hook and which thickness of wool would you suggest to make a start?

I'm going into town tomorrow and Boyes sell wool and I'm sure they must have crochet hooks.
