Dazi, I'd love to make the twirly scarf! Not done any crochet since school!! What size hook and which thickness of wool would you suggest to make a start?
I'm going into town tomorrow and Boyes sell wool and I'm sure they must have crochet hooks.

Hi, I just popped in from the Knit a Square thread for a quick nosy :rotfl:
the twirly scarves are great, you can use any wool you fancy!
For DK use a 4mm hook, for Aran - 5mm and for Chunky use 6mm
Have fun!
Pam:heart2:
ps. We'd love to see your scarf on the Knit a Square thread when its finished, we're a nosy bunch but very welcoming.

I wish I could come round and show you too! I'm not that great but will have a go at anything, granny squares are ok, but a bit boring, you have to make a load of them to do anything with them, thats why I think the twirly scarf is a good thing, its not difficult and would give you a great sense of achievement when you have done it.
So, ok you are going to make one of these
You know how to do a chain, do a chain of at least 100, more if you want a longer scarf, I use 130 turn round and do a double crochet into each chain.....if you are watching an american vid they call it a single crochet, dunno whyits just hook through chain stitch, yarn over hook, pull through, yarn over hook, pull the two stiches through. The next row is a bit different, but won't go into that now, you could
do a practice with say a 20 chain. Just to get the hang of it.
Trust Jackie, you can do this, and if all else fails, we will ask help from the experts on here lol
WOOOOOOO! I have a mentor! :j:j:j
Ok, no problem boss. Now chain = simple. The double crochet - I can do. I opened my xmas present crochet kit last night and learnt that stitch (but they called it a single stitch too).
Now, When you say "turn around", do i then go into the stitch beside the one I have just done and start there? Do I go into the front or the back? (Front is the V back is the knots?) Am i over complicating this?
I tried last night to do the circly one - adjustable circle or something its called? Only the book said lots of things will start like that, and it's a good thing to master, and it will tell me where one chain begins? Anyway, by the by.
yay twirly scarf! Ill go straight in for the full size thanks. I have one ball of wool (1oog I think) is that enough?:T
Oh see you've got a couple more foollowers he he!
Thanks for the comments Pf, will be in knit thread once I feela bit more accomplished.:o
What's DK? I need to learn these abbreviations........ I tried looking for an index on the knit thread but couldn't find one and it terrified me to be honest (beyond me at the mo)A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Hi Zippy, glad you are giving the twirly scarf a go as it will give you lots of practice on doing the same stitches over and over again. The 100 grams of double knitting wool was what I used and there was plenty. The scarf takes more wool than you would imagine though and a useful tip is to do some rows in a contrasting colour if you think you are running short. The wonder of it starting to twirl is brill and will inspire you to keep going. Take your time at first, don't panic and you will find you get quicker eventually. Good luck0

I've been busy with my hook recently. I uploaded some photos of my crochet to flickr(where I am Quincelady -because of the quince tree in my garden).0

Thriftlady, I love the rainbow plant pot covers, I have to have a bash at those. The granny squares are so vibrant, did you have a plan for the colours or just made them as they took your fancy?

When I make the squares I lay out all colours on the floor so that I can try out different blends. Initially I was going to mix the colours up within the squares but then I saw they fell into two groups -reds and pinks and blues and greens so I decided to make them in those two colour groups.
The vibrancy of the squares is partly due to my shiny new camera and its wonderful 'vibrant' colour setting.0 -
